Mars holds a special fascination for us, because it is the most Earth-like planet we've yet encountered. As we continue to explore the red planet, geological evidence mounts that long ago water flowed freely across its surface, begging the question: If there was water, was there life? Graham Hancock thinks so. In fact, Hancock, a former journalist and the author of several books, including Fingerprints of the Gods, believes that certain formations on the Martian surface are the remnants of an ancient civilization--one strikingly similar to ancient Egypt--that was destroyed by a cataclysmic deep impact. Further, Hancock claims that NASA's reluctance to give credence to "The Face," "The Pyramids," and other things people see in images of the Martian surface is evidence that the U.S. space agency is motivated by cold war paranoia and mistrust. Hancock seems to be more fair-minded than many NASA critics, stating that, "what we see is a mindset, here, not a conspiracy." And indeed, one is hard-pressed to imagine why NASA isn't agreeing wholeheartedly with Hancock, since his ultimate point is that we should be paying more attention to our planetary neighbors and the skies above, lest we suffer the same fate as the Martians. Still relevant; Always informative and thought provoking!

In his well researched and carefully cited way, the always erudite and controversial, Hancock delivers a compelling thesis about the "known" (yet untimed) ancient cataclysmic event which changed the face of Mars and effectually "Killed" an otherwise living planet; as well as a possible connection with our planet Earth? He shows that it is highly likely and reasonable to conclude, that whatever happened to Mars, may have had an 'impact' on our fair world, due to the nature of the event and the close proximity of both planets (when compared to a cosmic or galactic scale of distances).

Having previously read "Fingerprints of the Gods" some years ago (admittedly one of his best efforts to date, as well as a high benchmark); I was a little surprised that I had not gotten around to reading "The Mars Mystery". Though this book is no "Fingerprints"; it is worthy of a careful reading especially if you are amenable to Hancock's line of thinking. It did help that I was familiar with the work of those cited, such as R.C. Hoagland's tome; "The Monuments of Mars" and his lesser known; "Dark Mission - The Secret History of NASA". Yes it helps to have those as a background or backdrop, however it is not absolutely necessary, because Hancock fills in the gaps and makes sure you see exactly how he has connected the dots and has come to his conclusions (along with the consensus and collaboration of several contributing co-writers).

One notable point was the time he devoted to help 'flesh-out' for the readers understanding - of what [we think] we know about comets and asteroids, particularly concerning the often subtle differences between them. Unless the reader is an astronomer or astrophysicist, this is a worthwhile tutorial of large hurtling space-borne objects in general. And although this was published in 1998, it still carries as much relevance today, as it did at the end of the 20th century - now seemingly so long ago. Is there speculation, conjecture and some incredible posits? Of course and then some! But isn't that why we like to read the works of author/researchers such as this in the first place?

I'm still trying to figure out how the Aztec's knew to name Mars, "Xipe Xolotl", the twin brother of their high god Quetzalcoatl; the name meaning in effect, "the Flayed Red God of the East." All ancient civilizations acknowledged Mars as the Red planet, but how could the Aztec's have known that Mars literally had half of its surface "peeled-off like an orange...", technically a "flayed planet"? Or how about the interesting Arabic meaning of the place name 'Cairo' as "Mars"! What a strange and enigmatic coincidence; that is unless one understands the "Why" of a connection such as that. Not mentioned in this book, but there exists renderings of 17th-18th century maps of Egypt, where Cairo is depicted as "Old Babylon" (from the Akkadian,"Babili" which translates to "Gateway of the Gods"). Make of that what you wish, my point is that the rabbit hole is very deep when it comes to this region.

Due to the nature of the message that Hancock wishes to convey, and acknowledging that we are some 17 years further in time than first published, I would say this book might be even more timely now than it was then? Because of a recent movie ("The Martian") and due to media-hype in concert with NASA, Mars has been put back on the radar of the masses for perhaps another nanosecond or two. Given that one of the greatest mysteries or discoveries ever made by humankind might be waiting on the surface of Mars; staring at us in the form a giant enigmatic face surrounded by a huge network of mathematically impossible "arcologies", whose ultimate message could be a warning to others, but especially us, of what happens when a planet has a 'bad day'. Now some forty plus years after our numerous Moon missions, isn't it well past time to go to Mars and put "boots on the ground" to see close up what's what? Graham Hancock thought so way back in 1998, many others are now apparently catching up to him.

Interesting

Another excellent work by the author. Mr Hancock is an excellent and interesting writer. He writes in great depth so you can understand the who, what , when, where, how and why of his research and opinions. This book is typical to his writing in that regard. If you are knowledgeable on what he has written the books may cover a lot of ground you have trod in previous times. If you however are a novice in his field of research, you will be amazed at the amount of information he conveys. It is definitely another pass around book!

The FIRST Classic Lesbian Love Story with a Happy Ending!!

When I was questioning my sexuality (about being a lesbian) in the late 1980's, I was hungry for a book that would give me a positive outlook on being a lesbian. Unfortunately I didn't find or read any sexy, enlightening, and romantic lesbian novels until I stumbled upon 'Curious Wine' by Katherine Forrest. I read this book in a couple of hours and proceeded to read it at least another 50 times (this is no exaggeration.) I love this book so much, I own 4 copies. Also, in 2006 I travelled to Australia and New Zealand with a copy of this book in my luggage (I am NOT kidding!)

IN a nutshell, this book is about a groups of women (mostly acquaintances or strangers) who meet up in cabin in Lake Tahoe for a vacation. Lane Christianson, a lawyer, and Diana, a personnel manager, immediately strike up a friendship which soon develops into something more. Please be warned, this book is a bit dated (the time frame takes place in the late 1970's) but this is still one of my all time favorite books EVER! And at least to me, this book has it all - gorgeous women, fabulous and multiple lesbian love scenes, romantic intensity, and most especially A HAPPY ENDING.

Up until Curious Wine came out, lesbians (espeically good looking ones) living happily ever after was a rare thing (in fact I never read a book that had a happy ending until this one.) By the way, the book on tape of this book is also fabulous. The lady who reads it has this delicious English accent and I listened to it so much, I broke the tape!

Buy a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed (unless you hate romance.)

I've been reading romance novels for many years and this is a truly wonderful story with outstanding characterization. I read this for the first time this year and have read it several times since. It is a total feel good novel and deals with deep emotional issues.

At the end of the book you feel joyful. Expertly paced writing that is a delight to read.

The humor is fabulous, "do not fold spindle or mutilate" will forevermore bring this novel to mind for me (s).

Delectable love scenes - truly heart warming and loving. They advance the story perfectly and are unique and never gratuitous.

I can not say enough good things about this story or the writing - my one wish would be a short story from the author about Diana and Lane as I can not get enough of them.

Great book. It was really hard to put down

Great book. It was really hard to put down, I finished it within a couple days. It covers his entire career from wrestling school in Texas, touring in England, living in a gym, fighting in japan, the main event in ROH, and taking over the WWE. It is an incredible story and it couldn't happen to a better person. Highly recommend it.

Yes!: My Improbably Enjoyable Journey to the End of this Book

My decision to buy and read this book was made on impulse shortly after I became aware of its existence. Despite being an avid professional wrestling/sports entertainment/whatever you want to call it fan for most of my life, I don't read these sorts of books often (the last one was by Adam Copeland, better known as Edge, and was published in 2004), though I do enjoy them. Pro wrestling, on the other hand, I haven't always enjoyed, and I don't think I would have gotten back into it or bought this book were it not for the WWE Network, which has allowed me to relive my favorite moments (mostly from the Attitude Era) and become acquainted with others from the past (like early Wrestlemanias) and present (like pretty much every match on NXT).

My subscription to the Network is really recent, which is important in the context of this review because sometime before The Great Khali became the "Punjabi Playboy" and up until the subscription, I stopped watching WWE programming, so many of the wrestlers and events mentioned in this book were ones I never saw, only heard about, since I kept somewhat up-to-date on my favorites (finding out that The Streak had ended was devastating; seeing it end on the Network a couple of weeks ago was worse) as their appearances declined along with my interest in storylines.

The talent currently known as Daniel Bryan was someone I didn't understand. I admired the beard but couldn't wrap my head around the popularity of the YES Movement or its leader, who was completely unknown to me (I've never had an interest in the indie scene, and I blame that on never knowing there was one until two years ago) in terms of what he had done or could do. That was my mindset before buying the book, of course, and I am glad I decided to change it.

Every chapter consists of two parts: a third-person account of an event taking place on Wrestlemania Week and a first-person account of the past. Both progress chronologically independent from one another, contrasting the celebrity status of Daniel Bryan with the humble (but not easy) life of Bryan Danielson until, like strands of DNA, they intersect at the end. It's a format that works wonderfully, and I think the experience is richer for it. I was hardly able to put the book down, always anticipating the next chapters (pardon the pun) in these sagas. In that respect, reading this book is like watching a good match, setting it apart from most autobiographies, even some with similar subject matter. Moments that take place on and off TV come alive in the mind's eye with ease, with the occasional photograph (nothing graphic) to remind readers that while the WWE creates fiction, this is anything but.

This is the story of a man who is likeable, funny, endearing, and inspiring; a man who can ignite a crowd with a single word; a man who has achieved greatness but finds happiness and comfort in simplicity; a man who has sometimes been overlooked but is impossible to ignore or forget; a man who decided to tell a story worth hearing.

A fine piece of wrestling literature

I've read some wrestling bios in my day, and this is up there with the best. No drunken hijinks or pill-fueled adventures, just a guy who loves wrestling. The Craig parts are fairly embarrassing (we know Brie is attractive, you can stop reiterating that), but Bryan's stories more than make up for it.

Awesome!

'Deadly Design's is as great as the first book 'Dangerous Designs'. As with the first book, this one was also well written. The story was fantastic. I love this series. I am looking forward to reading the next book. The twists were unexpected and a delight. I fell in love with 'Tammy'. The bond grew between Storey and Eric. Overall, 'Deadly Design's' is an awesome read. I recommend this book for any age. Once I started reading, I had to finish.

Dale has done it again with this adventure. I really liked that she inserted the last chapter of the previous book 'Dangerous Designs' to bring you back into the story. The world she built, the characters, the motives, all ring true. She has a fantastic imagination. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

A Reading the Paranormal Review

Just so y'all know, Dale Mayer delights in leaving her characters in heart-stopping danger. Don't get me wrong, she gives us a satisfactory ending to the book's arc. She doesn't leave us hanging in that respect. However, poor Storey isn't out of the woods yet and she's going to have to fight to get where she needs to be. Metaphorically. Although I guess it could be literally, too. I don't know. The point is, there's a cliffhanger and it's a doozy.

I have to admit that the world here intrigues me. It's alternately high-tech and not-so-high-tech (with some oddly advanced powers) depending on which dimension they're in. Oh, and then there's the everyday, normal dimension that Storey's from. Only it's not so everyday now, is it? It will be interesting to see how *that* gets resolved because it feels like something pretty major and it's one of those things that has the potential to get very bad before it gets better. (Yes, I'm being intentionally vague. You're welcome.)

Storey and Eric are pretty sweet together. I love the way Eric sees her, too. In his world, she's a force of nature. She isn't held back by their way of thinking and she isn't afraid to speak her mind. She fascinates him because of this. Storey's drawn to Eric because he sees her in a way that no one else ever has. Like I said, they're just so sweet together.

Backstabbing, psychic attacks, danger, and cheese all combine to make this a fun and interesting read. Yes, Storey's left in danger at the end, but that just means we get to anticipate her next book all the more. The idea behind the portals and the worlds that have been created here are so engrossing that they'll keep you entertained until the bitter end. Not that the ending's bitter, mind you... you know what? Good book. That's what I have to say about it.
