About the Author
CHARLES R. BROOKS is Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Alumni Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee. He has received several teaching awards, including the M.E. Brooks Distinguished Faculty Award of the College of Engineering and the Albert Easton White Teaching Award from ASM International. He is also a Fellow of ASM International.

ASHOK CHOUDHURY is Commercialization Manager for the Office of Technology Transfer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He is the recipient of several teaching awards and technology transfer awards, and a co-recipient of an R&D 100 Award.

Humbling

I have been a forensic engineer for a good many years and I'm now on the Board of the American College of Forensic Engineering and Technology. That said, I have also prided myself in my knowledge of the mechanics of materials, failure analysis, properties, etc., but this incredible reference book has indeed brought me to my knees; it is, as the title of this review indicates, humbling to the very people that think they know more than the average bear, me included. This is a true in-depth treatise of the field of engineering materials science, replete with many photos, graphs, and illustrations. Dollar for dollar, gram for gram, this is the best reference of its type on the market. If you are a forensic engineer, even if your particular expertise is not in material analysis and/or failure issues, you would do well to have this reference on your bookshelf; I guarantee it.

Perfect for Professional Engineers

This book is exactly what I was looking for: application based failure analysis supplemented with theory and case studies. The book is very well written AND concise. The book contains the perfect amount of theory for practicing engineers, and countless related examples. This is not a course textbook laden with derivations and complex math. The authors wrote a perfect book for professional engineers involved with material failure analysis. Not to mention many pictures of failure surfaces with clear explanation of what the picture is showing. This is a book I will keep close for frequent referencing.

Bought this hoping to find some nudes of the gal they put on the cover. Shame on Playboy, as she has never done any nude shots that I can find or that anyone I have contacted has found. I mean its "PLAYBOY" for cryin out loud! Since when do they put a pic on the cover that doesn't lead to an UNcovering ???
I'll give em a break since this was forty years ago (its 2012 as I write) and hope Hef was just hoping to get some by putting her on the cover of that very collectible issue.

I got it very cheap. I was only interested in the cover picture, unfotunately, the cover was HEAVILY worn, to the point you couldn't make out the cover all that well. All the other parts of the magazine were perfect, but the cover, the one thing I wanted, was terrible.

Honestly, I would like just a poster of the cover. I don't know if that is possible, but that is what I'm looking for. Since this didn't meet my expectations, I have to give it 1 star. Otherwise, it was in good condition.

About the Author

Ralph L. Kliem has more than 25 years of experience with Fortune 500 firms in the financial and aerospace industries. His wide, varied experience in project and program management includes managing compliance and information technology projects and programs.

He is the author of more than 15 books that have been translated in several languages. He has also published more than 200 articles in leading business and information systems publications.

Mr. Kliem is an adjunct faculty member of City University in Seattle and a former member of the Seattle Pacific University faculty. He is an instructor with Bellevue College and Cascadia Community College and a frequent presenter to the Puget Sound chapter of the Project Management Institute and other professional organizations. He also teaches Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and other project management seminars and workshops in the United States and Canada.

In 1948, West Berliners were suffering and hungry, existing on food rations transported by trucks, trains and barges primarily by the occupying American forces. The Russians, trying to control the divided city, blockaded the transports on June 24, 1948, and American and British pilots risked their lives to airlift in 4.6 billion pounds of food and supplies until the blockade was lifted in May 1949. Pilot Hal Halvorsen won Berliners' hearts by secretly dropping his and his buddies' candy rations by parachute into the waiting hands of the city's children. In the process, says Cherny (The Next Deal), Berliners became devoted to democracy, and Washington foreign policy and military brass learned that the Cold War needed to be won not primarily with bullets but by appealing to hearts and minds. This book could have been cut by a third for better effect; Cherny's prose and his references to 9/11 are manipulative, and his subject, particularly the nuts and bolts of the airlift, will appeal primarily to WWII buffs, who should still find much to savor in this exhaustive, often absorbing and lucid account of America's successful standoff against the Soviets. 16 pages of b&w photos. An uplifting, well-told analysis

-Just wanted to add another well-deserved five-star review for this book. I have just finished it and didn't want it to end, but was cheered to have read it.

-Candy Bombers describes how the Berlin Airlift not only became a strategic victory for democratic ideals, but a positive and uplifting victory for the human spirit. Cherny begins by describing the events preceding the Airlift, including the almost unspeakable devastation and hopeless forecast for recovery in Germany at the time. The War largely destroyed Berlin, rebuilding was painfully slow, and not only did the Germans and the Allies despise each other but by 1948 the distrust between the Western and Soviet allies allies threatened to bring another major conflict to the area. That year, the Soviets blockaded the land routes to Berlin, and Cherny then rivetingly describes how the airlift became "THE Airlift" -- how it grew from a chaotic makeshift, ridiculous patchwork effort into one of the most efficient resupply efforts the world has ever seen. This did not have to happen -- indeed, few people even though it could be successful and the nay-sayers were won over only slowly. This development was itself an act of kindness and persistence. Along the way, Cherny describes how the Airlift helped show Germans and the Western Allies that yes, they actually did care for each other and were both willing to sacrifice deeply for democracy and community. This beautiful transformation was hastened by a kind-hearted pilot who decided to drop pieces of candy to some hungry and kindness-needing kids along his flight path (candy was amazingly scarce after the war, and was happily received). No matter what your political views, this story is amazing -- how a simple but persistent act of decency can transform the spirits of innocent children and can set the conditions for a similar transformation in adults. Compassion is the source for hope, and its exercise can make one proud to be human. Cherny then describes how the Airlift invigorated Western foreign policy and how the Soviets never again succeeded in gaining another inch of territory in Europe. Indeed, it was a singular peak for democracy, before the Russians exploded an atom bomb, the Korean stalemate began, and materialism became a dominant factor in American culture.

-The author writes exceptionally well -- this was a most interesting and well-coordinated tale, with excellent (if not always archival) documentation and internal consistency. I am sure someone will point out an inaccuracy here and there, but this book succeeds at its purpose and I would place it among the upper echelon of uplifting, well-told books I can remember reading. The book combined the right elements of realism and idealism, and made me prouder to be a human being.

Great story, illuminating history, extremely well written!

I just picked this book up and once I started reading I could not put it down. The book is fascinating and covers a critical but now mostly forgotten turning point in world history. One aspect of the book I found most interesting was how the blockade of Berlin impacted the direction of Truman's presidency and changed the direction of U.S. policy to halt Soviet expansionism. It seems clear now that had there been no blockade and no airlift, Truman's winning a second term would have been highly unlikely.

My only complaint is the choice of title. It's not the first book about the airlift using 'Candy Bombers' in the title. But really, why quibble. This is much more than a book about nice guy pilots, 'The Candy Bombers', throwing chocolate from their planes as they flew into Berlin (though a heart-warming story it was). I hope we will be seeing more books from Mr. Cherny in the not too distant future. He is the same caliber of writer and historian as David McCullough, Douglas Brinkley and the formidable Stephen Ambrose

A fantastically written history of a critical moment

I have to admit I am not a "history buff" and generally choose novels for my summer reading. Moreover, I somehow never once got to the end of World war II in any of the history classes in my 22 years of education, so this book was not a natural pick for me. But The Candy Bombers felt like a novel, it was so dramatically told and wonderfully written. As others point out, this book is about an event that gains more and more relevance to contemporary events every day, as we debate how to move forward in the "war on terror," as we take more and more prisoners in this "war," and as natural catastrophes devastate countries in distant lands. The question of how to treat a defeated enemy, even one so horrifically evil as Nazi Germany, is profoundly moral. How we answer it in many ways defines who we are as a nation. Mr. Cherny notes in his blog that all four of his grandparents were concentration camp survivors, and that he had struggle with this question as wrote his account of the airlift. The result of his struggle is an extremely impressive and visionary book.

Previn Jones Entrepreneur, motivational speaker and public relations expert, Previn Jones has traveled the country with a message of positive change to help both individuals and organizations achieve maximized results. As a public relations strategist, Previn has planned, implemented and executed multiple public relations campaigns for elected officials, non-profits and corporate sector clients. As a political staffer, Previn held key positions in communications and policy, eventually working his way up to Chief of Staff. After leaving public service, Previn founded CES Public Relations an integrated public relations firm specializing in public affairs, strategic communications, government and media relations. Previn was educated in the North Forest Independent School District and continued his academic training at Texas Southern University (TSU), the University of Houston and the University of Phoenix. Previn currently holds a Bachelors Degree in Administration of Justice and a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA). An absolute must read! Especially public speakers

This book, "Public Speaking the Freeman Way," was a fabulous read! I have been a speaker for over 10 years, and have read several books on the subject, but none captured the "how-to" of public speaking as clearly as this book. The author takes great care to skillfully cut down the often intimidating topic of speaking publically, into palatable pieces, arming the reader with a sense of empowerment. You will be left with the feeling, "I really CAN do this!" Anyone, from the novice to the seasoned speaker will benefit from the well developed, golden principles laid out in this book.
