Review
"My first impression is that the new study skills coverage will be a welcome addition to the current text. I think they help to tie together critical pieces to the success puzzle that takes a distinct shape for each individual."

"I love the On Course book but have felt that the student's need for enhanced study skills was missing. I would now teach the class as Skip had originated the text but show students how their motivation and responsibility ties in with the additional study skills portion."

"I am thrilled with the CORE Learning Process and integration into the "Wise Choices" sections. As I read through the first section I was excited about it, and by the 3rd chapter I was ecstatic - it's integrated very well with the material from the rest of the chapter and the book as a whole. I really like when material from the chapter the student has just read becomes part of the examples within the "Wise Choice" section. In the past I had a hard time getting my students to try out the ideas found in the current study skills sections of On Course and therefore I needed to create an additional project for them to apply the strategies. Now I can see how these sections will allow them to engage and apply skills each week along with their reading."

"I love the CORE learning process. I think it adds depth to the text. I believe the integration is thorough and these will be very effective tools. I have always loved the On Course material and never thought it was lacking, but reviewing this material makes me want the new edition now. The additions are insightful improvements which show Skip knows what we need as educators before some of us realize we need it."

"I think that the CORE Learning Process is an exceptional way to enable students to organize their materials. Most students utilize one or two of the process, but in no semblance of order and with no idea of how or why they are doing it. This is definitely an effective tool as it allows the student to work within a logical pattern of gathering, managing, reviewing and assessing their materials."

This should be the first text a college student is required to read
By Kenneth J. Kohutek
Beginning with the inside of the front cover which lists differences between "successful student" and "struggling student", this book is filled with information which will improve the performance of any student in college. While this should be on the "must read" for summer reading of new college students, it would be useful as a review and ways to improve for any student. There is a self-assessment tool which would point the student to areas of strengths and weaknesses found in the back of Chapter 1. By addressing areas of weaknesses first, this 300+ page book can be broken down to specific chapters. Once the student realizes the results of implementing the suggestions, it will be easy to incorporate the rest of the chapters into the reading schedule. Selected chapters address accepting personal responsibility (chapter 2), discovering self-motivation (chapter 3), and self-awareness (chapter 6).

This volume could be used in the freshman curriculum or bits incorporated into introductory courses already in place. I can see this being included as part of an introduction to psychology class. While the title addresses college, the lessons include topics which are relevant to success in life both during and after one's formal education.

Parts of this could, and should, be used in high school classes for those students who are motivated and wanting to further develop their academic and leadership skills.

I recommend placing a copy of this in every new student's trunk which is being packed for that adventure called "college".

Best book I've read on how to succeed in college and life!
By A Customer
As an educator, this is the book I wish I had written. The author is a great coach, persuasively urging readers to make wise choices that will change the outcome of their lives both in college and in life. I highly recommend this book to teachers and students alike.

You have got to be kidding me!
By Momma
Maybe it was because the book was a required text for an English class, and I thought that inappropriate, but I really did not like this book. Maybe it is because I am not a person who is able to have a serious conversation with my inner critic and then analyze the listening style of that that imaginary voice. I went into the course with an open mind, but after so many patronizing Dr.Phil-after-a-ripping-bong-hit style Journey Entry assignments, I was tired of having my time wasted. (The margins contain many Oprah quotes, so if you are a fan, dig in.) If you need a therapist, get a therapist. If you must have a book to help you succeed in life, try Seven Habits by Covey.

Well written and highly informative
By L. Yuen
I sure appreciated this little book. The author is a college professor in California who is also a rancher. He gives the reader an excellent look at how illegal immigration is impacting the United States. He knows first hand how theft affects him as a rancher, and it is more than a nuisance. It's bad in Arizona where people have to worry about their homes and belongings when they leave home due to the unprecedented levels of break ins and theft occurring there. I wanted to understand the situation that illegal immigration is causing because I want to move to Arizona, and this book tells it like it is, including how it is significantly impacting society, our safety, our welfare system, the cost to us as taxpayers, and employment opportunity. Is it really right to make babies born of parents who are not American citizens American citizens just because they happened to be born here? I think not. They grow up somewhere else in the world without benefit of Americanization and claim citizenship when it serves them. It's good that colleges across the nation are using this book in their classrooms. It's easy to read and full of eye opening facts.

Both Sides of the Problem
By Mark Sutter
The book is well written and what impressed me the most is that the whole immigration problem is looked at from the perspective of the aliens as well as the existing residents of California. According to the author, one of the biggest problems we currently face with illegal immigration is the refusal of nearly all of the immigrants to assimilate to the American way.

I'll leave you with one small section of one of the last chapters in the book to give you a glimpse of the contents:

"If Mexico had not been contiguous to the United States, if migration had only come in the thousands, not the millions, if self-proclaimed advocates on campus and in the media had been honest and responsible folk, and if this had remained an America of the melting pot rather than the separatist culture of the 1980s and 1990s, then, I think, we would have fewer problems with race, culture, and immigration. But that is a lot of ifs."

Too bad the gang-of-eight senators currently working on immigration reform don't take the time to read this book and understand the contents.

The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women, by Naomi Wolf

The bestselling classic that redefined our view od the relationship between beauty and female identity.

In today's world, women have more power, legal recognition, and professional success than ever before. Alongside the evident progress of the women's movement, however, writer and journalist Naomi Wolf is troubled by a different kind of social control, which, she argues, may prove just as restrictive as the traditional image of homemaker and wife. It's the beauty myth, an obsession with physical perfection that traps the modern woman in an endless spiral of hope, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of "the flawless beauty."

Amazon.com Review
In a country where the average woman is 5-foot-4 and weighs 140 pounds, movies, advertisements, and MTV saturate our lives with unrealistic images of beauty. The tall, nearly emaciated mannequins that push the latest miracle cosmetic make even the most confident woman question her appearance. Feminist Naomi Wolf argues that women's insecurities are heightened by these images, then exploited by the diet, cosmetic, and plastic surgery industries. Every day new products are introduced to "correct" inherently female "flaws," drawing women into an obsessive and hopeless cycle built around the attempt to reach an impossible standard of beauty. Wolf rejects the standard and embraces the naturally distinct beauty of all women.

From Publishers Weekly
Wolf's valuable study, documenting societal pressures on women to conform to a standard of beauty, hit PW 's hardcover bestseller list for one week.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Journalist and poet Wolf presents a provocative and persuasive account of the pervasiveness of the beauty ideal in all facets of Western culture, including work, sex, and religion. In showing how this myth works against women and how women sabotage themselves by their complicity with this impossible standard, she discusses at length two unfortunate consequences: the growth in the number of bulimic and anorexic women and the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery. The facts are certainly stacked to prove her thesis but, for the most part, provide convincing evidence. In her final chapter, Wolf instructs women on how to crack the beauty myth. Recommended, especially for women's studies collections.

An enlightening read for either gender!
By Ginger
Naomi Wolf uses this book to slap all of society in the face. This smart and angry book testifies that women are confined by the single idea of “beauty” on the grounds of work, culture, religion, sex, hunger and violence. Wolf promises to enlighten readers with feminist ideas and enlighten readers about how enslaving the ideal “beauty” image truly is for women.

The Beauty Myth expands on the statement that “beauty” is a way to keep women as inferiors. Women fought for their rights and earned them, so society had to find a new way to suppress them. This book portrays a unique inequality beyond one of monetary value that women face between them and men; women are bound by impossible standards of appearance alongside working day in and day out to achieve status, while men simply must work hard to be successful. "What women look like is considered important because what we say is not,” Wolf tells us, illustrating this profound point in a such a simple way, showing readers that the facts would all be this simple if they were not purposefully hidden from us.

This book serves to expose the unfairness of the images of beauty. This seems so simple, but Wolf manages to separate her arguments into six main chapters, each filled with anecdotes and authorization through supported research. Reading through her novel as a woman, I felt that she was speaking to me personally. With each statistic, any woman reading this is faced with a simple fact that she is part of these numbers. While the book may emotionally appeal to women, I feel it would also be a great read for men. Men are often oblivious to the fact that the images of women around them are designed to put normal women’s appearances to shame, and could use this book to learn to not fall prey to ignoring a woman’s intelligence because of the way she looks.

The only weakness I see in Wolf’s writing is her absence of a counter-argument. There are parts of the novel where skeptical readers may be left with their doubts since she never addresses the opposing side of the argument.

The Beauty Myth promises to leave both male and female readers haunted by Naomi Wolf’s passionate fury towards the feminism movement.

A receptive audience, but I was rather disappointed…
By John P. Jones III
I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. The cumulative scattered flakes of various women’s lives congealed into the impetus to finally read this book, one of the classics of feminist literature: A truly beautiful woman who truly thought she was ugly (and was not just fishing for compliments); an accomplished professional woman with an imperceptible lump on her nose who had to go through the horrors (as Wolf so well describes) of a “nose-job”; women who have to get breast implants that destroy the beauty and feel of a breast. And then there was all this generalized dissatisfaction with who they were – physically – far more so, than mentally.

Another “flake” that underscored what I felt was wrong about this book came from one conversation with an NGO “activist,” in Hanoi of all places, who was on a campaign to have landmines banned. Again, I was a “receptive audience.” Landmines were a scourge of some countries, notably Angola, Cambodia, and to a lesser extent, Vietnam, in which landmines were just one subset of the perils of unexploded ordinance, all of which were just one subset of the damage done to the country, which included the use of chemical weapons, such as Agent Orange. The NGO activist was trying to impress me with her many hard quantitative facts that fit so neatly into a spreadsheet… but as I pressed her on the methodology… the “how could you possibly know have many landmines were originally buried… how many remain… how many injuries were caused in time of war, and latter… I could tell she was largely just making it up. Good intentions, no doubt, and a shield of quantitative analysis, but isn’t that how McNamara operated?

With Naomi Wolf, the dubious stats starts early, and I noted another reviewer was disconcerted by the blunt, conclusory statement made on page 22: “Women work hard – twice as hard as men.” The worst chapter that contained a staccato machine-gun fire of dubious factoids is the one entitled “Hunger.” Consider: “One fifth of women who exercise to shape their bodies have menstrual irregularities and diminished fertility” (p192). At Treblinka, 900 calories was scientifically determined to be the minimum necessary to sustain human functioning” (p195). Scientifically?? “For women to stay at the official extreme of the weight spectrum requires 95 percent of us to infantilize or rigidify to some degree our mental lives” (p199). “Nothing justifies comparison with the Holocaust; but when confronted with a vast number of emaciated bodies starved not by nature but by men, one must notice a certain resemblance” (p207). Men?? Other chapters contain similar dubious factoids, like the percentage of rapes, and the extraordinary high percentage of rapes that occur between individuals who know each other, including spouses. Or, in the chapter on “Work”: “In the United States, partners of employed women give them LESS help than do partners of housewives” (p23).

‘Tis a pity, all of the above. Because there is so much to like about this book, and Wolf’s critical thinking about why “things are the way they are.” For example, I felt that her chapter entitled “Religion,” in which she describes how “the Beauty Myth” came to replace and utilize many of the techniques of organized religion, particularly in regards to the control of women. Likewise, the chapter on “Work” was strong, and I thought her discussion on the legal arguments, and abuse of the legal system in the promotion of something called the “Professional Beauty Qualification” most beneficial. In essence, can you fire a “Playboy bunny” which she gets to old, fat, or ugly… and how that concept might spread to any job held by a female. The chapter on “Violence” mainly describes not rape, as one might assume, but the assault by the underbelly of the medical profession (and some other assorted hucksters) who essentially convince women that they are not “real women” without some surgery… and how some women actually become “surgery addicts.”

Who are “the who”? Wolf never discusses who actually creates and enforces “the Beauty Myth.” Are they the proverbial five guys, in the backroom, with the cigars and brandy, who decide how they will control the rest of us? Or, is it something much deeper, about the human condition, relating to fundamental competition for a sexual or economic “prize”?

This book was originally published in 1991, thus, it was, for all practically purposes, pre-internet. Wolfe includes a new introduction written in 2002, in which she discusses the progress… and the steps back… which occurred in the intervening decade. And now, a decade and a half later, another update would be most appropriate. In particular, yesterday I was treated to the very battered-face of Ronda Rousey, as the lead article on the CNN website. She was the Ultimate Fighting Conference loser, in 47 seconds, to her Brazilian opponent. ANY discussion about “pornography” should commence with that battered face, the “fans” who spend so much to see it, and a mainstream news source that would published that face – without criticism – while shielding its tender readers from the pictures of the dead and wounded from the many wars we fight.

Wolf’s account carries numerous footnotes, but these are not directly tied to her quotes, a sampling of which were provided above. She references the works of several other leading feminists, for example, Betty Frieden, Susan Faludi, Catherine McKinnon and Andre Dworkin. The latter, and her influence, in particular, has concerned me. I gave Dworkin’s Intercourse a 3-star review. On the other hand, I was most impressed with Faludi’s Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women which I gave 5-stars to. As indicated, I was disappointed with this work, which, in addition to the above, contained serious redundancies and other editing problems. Overall, 3-stars.

The behaviorist philosophy of science
By Amazon Customer
"About Behaviorism" explicates Skinner's radical behaviorism with clarity and cogency. But make no mistake - this book is no breeze, particularly to those who are unfamiliar with behaviorism and its experimental nuances. I would recommend reading this book in conjunction with Skinner's other work - "science and human behavior", as well as obtaining a modicum of knowledge concerning operant conditioning prior to tackling this work. Grasping the principal facets of Skinner's brand of behaviorism is easier said than done for the behaviorist neophyte: the fact that Skinner articulates his ethos in non-scientific 'readable' terms simplifies the language but not the ideas.

As for the work itself, Skinner embarks on a thorough and seminal examination of human behavior in "About Behaviorism." Skinner describes behavior as occurring through a causal chain of physical and putatively mental events. A physical event (contact with a hot stove) produces a mental event (the tactual sensation of `pain') which in turn produces another physical event (recoiling away from the heat). Unlike other behaviorist models, Skinner's radical behaviorism does not discount `mental' events as `unobservable' or `subjective', but merely disputes that they are `mental'. Moreover, the putative mental events which produce actions must not simply be discounted because they lack an objective framework. Such an approach nurtures the fictive mentalist depictions of the internal events antecedent to observable behavior. Radical behaviorism countenances the existence of the private events within the skin, challenges the nature of those events as `mental', and illuminates the misleading manner in which the internal observer - the individual who `feels' and `thinks' - characterizes and reports such events.

One important distinction Skinner introduces is between contingencies of survival and contingencies of reinforcement. Contingencies of survival consist of activity integral for organisms' survival (eating, breathing, sleeping, etc.). Contingencies of reinforcement refers to events that occur after behavior which by virtue of their consequences increase the probability that the behavior will occur again. Training a dog to `sit' for a treat represents a classic case of `conditioning', and the dog treat comprises the contingency that subsequently reinforces the behavior of `sitting'. The error that often occurs is to then claim that the dog will then sit because of some `instinct or `because he is hungry.' The dog's hunger is clearly collateral to the true cause of the behavior - the contingency. Skinner's behaviorist model adopts this reasoning towards the environmental contingencies which engender human behavior. Just as it is erroneous to conclude that a dog's hunger causes it to sit, so too is it inaccurate to explain that a man goes to watch a baseball game because "he feels like it," "thinks it's a good idea," or is merely "bored." All such explanations exclusively rely on internal events within the man's skin and belie the true causality that produces the behavior.

Conventional language couches what we call emotions, desires, and most importantly - choices, in vernacular that dissemble the true character of the events occurring - in Skinner's words - "within our skin." When a lovelorn individual longs for an unreciprocated romance, he might state that `lovesickness' causes his despondency. But as Skinner correctly asserts, descriptions of such feelings or emotions invoke `private stimuli.' But it is the `public stimuli' - the absence of the reinforcing contingency of the amorous behavior, that properly captures the external referent which causes both emotion and behavior. Thus when someone gets pricked by a needle, it is erroneous to report one's wincing as caused by the `pain'. `Pain' is an internal event, and a physiological phenomenon chosen by natural selection because of its worth in arranging an organisms' negative reinforcement of contingencies inimical to survival.

However, the most complex human behavior dulls Skinner's otherwise incisively analytical blade. The explanatory power of Skinnerian behaviorism is most problematic when the supposed contingencies that determine the subject's behavior come not from outside the skin, but from the subject himself. Our deepest cognition, conceptualizations, and quantitative reasoning - our most abstract ideations as to ontology, physics, and value - our most sophisticated social interactions, are not so easily elucidated by the behaviorist explanation. This does not mean the theory is false whatsoever - it simply points out that beyond the rudimentary Pavlovian level of stimulus and response - one must acknowledge that the fullest means to understand who we are come not from a facile glance at our external environmental contingencies, but from understanding the neuropsychological contingencies that we ourselves produce "within the skin." These contingencies may not be mental, but they are contingencies of behavior nonetheless. Daniel Dennett in "Consciousness Explained" has much to say on this matter. And while one cannot start the inquiry with such a Cartesian analysis in understanding our behavior, it is an intermediary in the great chain of stimulus and response that should not be skipped. Why do we daydream? Why do we philosophize? Neuropsychologists would assert that such exercises involve cerebral reproduction of information that have been mentally perceived, assimilated, and related in a Humean associationistic manner. This cerebral reproduction itself - although initially derived from an external stimulus - comprises a contingency that I'm not sure Skinner adequately analyzes.

Even if one's most personal dreams, visceral emotions, innermost thoughts, and `mental' ratiocinations are verbal reports not of internal cognitive events but external environmental contingencies, to explain this behavior by simply stating that it occurs because its personally and self reinforcing offers limited understanding. Skinner's behaviorism can easily explain why a man avoids the bad part of town when he walks to work, but this reductionist account becomes unfalsifiable philosophy when it tackles the most sophisticated, non-social, and meditative manifestations of cognition and language. Certainly, the neuropsychologist, linguist, and even philosopher offer understandings just as if not more valuable in characterizing this behavior. To illustrate, what contingency accounts for the mental imaging and defining of our most unconscious daydreams? For more on this debate, particularly within the behaviorist position on language, one should check Noam Chomsky's criticism of behaviorism as well as the subsequent behaviorist response by Nathan Stemmer.

This is not to say that Skinner's theory is wrong, but merely elicits the deeply complex `physical' causality at play. Skinner himself admits the shortcomings of the behaviorist position in explaining such behavior. This book merely questions the more untenable explanations of behavior and delves deeply into the problem of prescribing `causal' descriptions of human behavior. Thus the soundness of Skinner's approach lay in his modesty to consign explanations to a description of the contingency: NOT to recklessly postulate that the reason for the contingency's effect is a genetic prescription or environmental process without scientific substantiation of such a claim. But while spiritualisms and idealisms alike cringe at the implicit concept that humans do not possess free will, Skinner correctly recognizes the mentalist sophistry of attributing causation to everything else but our own minds. When one asks why another did not go to work today, to answer that it is because someone "makes a choice" is to give no answer at all. It is a meaningless explanation without any causal foundation and scientific worth. It therefore must be abandoned.

Ultimately, Skinner's antiseptic approach to the underlying reasons behind who humans are and why they act draws unfriendly and unfair fire from many. Indeed, the subject of human behavior has been plagued by human pride and ideological dogma. Others may doubt that this reductionist scheme can account for the more opaque and complex aspects of human behavior, and indeed, it seems strangely and simultaneously myopic and farsighted to explain abstract and cognitively internal verbal assertions through the prism of conditioning and contingencies of reinforcement. Still others have identified the tautological absurdity of human behavior deeming itself unfree and governed by environmental contingencies outside of its own control. The point is this: for any philosopher, social scientist, and psychologist who aims to assert that human language, cognition, and behavior represents something more than the offspring of natural selection and environmental contingencies - Skinner is the mountain that must be climbed, his views must be addressed, and the behaviorist position must be accounted for. Are we simply neurons firing, a highly sophisticated materialization of stimulus and response, and a more complex version of environmental conditioning?

Even if behaviorism might fall short in fully explaining human behavior, it has addressed a subject of insuperable complexity. Objectivity evaporates when human behavior examines itself. Thus if the behaviorist lens is not a scientifically valid `mirror' through which to examine the behavior humans, it is because no framework is valid and any study of human behavior falls to paradox and subjectivity. The greater point that Skinner asserts however, is that it achieves an understanding far more sound than Cartesian mentalism and associated conceptualizations of human behavior.

An exceptional book, and if one is - like me - not fully convinced that the reductionist behaviorist model can account for verbal and mental behavior, then I also recommend reading Daniel Dennett's physicalist exposition of consciousness and mind to enhance the behaviorist explanation of mental behavior.

Brilliant

A letter to the editor (published in August 1990 in the Los Angeles Times, in response to Skinner's obituary) asked the following disturbing question:

For the all effort and money spent in research in psychology, has there been any progress whatsoever?

The letter-writer asked this question not only of the Skinnerian approach in psychology but of all approaches. He seemed to be rather knowledgable in psychology. (If I remember right, he granted that the effects of intermittent reinforcement may well be something non-obvious that the research has uncovered. His point was that there is not much more.)

I was disturbed by this allegation. However, I couldn't come up with

a smoking gun rebuttal (though my thoughts were along the lines of verbal behavior and programmed instruction.)

Rereading About Behaviorism last week, I feel that Chapter 2 of this book may be pointed to as an unassailable answer to the above question -- Skinner makes some points here that are true advances being made for the first time in the history of human thought. These are Skinner's views on what self-knowledge and introspection is, the special problems posed by them, and how we have "solved" them at least partially. Skinner's views on these may well undergo considerable revision in the future -- however, without his first statement, such an improvement would not have been possible.

According to Skinner, the responses involved in introspection and self-knowledge are nothing more than verbal reports to stimulations inside the body. (In other words, these are not some mysterious non-physical stuff. The mind-body problem is solved neatly.) Skinner points out that primitive nervous systems are involved in these reports (primitive because these nervous systems have evolved not for this purpose but for other purposes). He also points out that those teaching a child to report these accurately are at a loss since they cannot directly feel these stimulations. Skinner's other points are the following:

1. The basic law of effect is what stamps in behavior

2. Unquestionably, changes in the nervous system are involved when behavior is stamped in. However, these do not produce stimulations that the learner can sense, report, and thus know (since no such nervous system has evolved).

3. Thus introspection is useless in order to know when behavior change occurs. (Skinner is not denying the private world. He readily grants even the practial usefulness of it. However, his point is that behavior altering nervous system changes cannot be directly sensed.)

Unquestionably, all these are very difficult to understand. However, one needs to only compare these with what passes in general for psychological theory to appreciate how briliant Skinnerian theory is.

I hope that I have not misunderstood Skinner too badly.

Easy going, but perfectly informative
By Leslie
I got this book for my Interpersonal Communications class this year and am about to go to my last class of the semester. I found the book interesting and easy to read - and we did read it in it's entirety. A lot of it was very basic but this is for an introductory course, so I'm not sure what else one would be be looking for really :D I personally enjoyed the things I did learn and had no problem glossing over the things that were already common knowledge. All in all no complaints from my end - thanks for an engaging book :D

Great Introductory Book
By Jarvis
I thought the book (2nd edition) was excellent. It was well-written in that it presented ideas very clearly and succinctly. The examples presented in the book (including references to Seinfeld, Everyone Loves Raymond, Friends, etc.) usually illustrated the point being made. There were many, many references to theories in interpersonal communication and some technical jargon that accompanies those theories. My instructor relied heavily upon this book and he is one of the stronger professors at my institution.

This book could be improved by providing more exercises. Occasionally various classifications (of behavior, etc.) in the theory were a little abstract and there were not enough examples to really clarify the point. The on-line quizzes presented scenarios and asked me to classify the scenario per the terms of the theory. A little more practice with these scenarios (e.g. exercises) would have better prepared me for the test. As I write this, I realize I'm giving a plug for the workbook, which I did NOT use.

Still I found this book to be exceptional. I rented it and want this as a permanent resource, so I expect to buy this in used condition when the 3rd edition comes out. I'm a solid "A" student with credits from several quality institutions and I don't understand the haters who have given it a substandard review.

A hit
By kstars
I gave this book to a man who has difficulty making meaningful social connections with people. He has Asbergers. He said he read it tirelessly, hungry for what was in the book, thinking this book was meant for him to read. I read a similar book that changed my life years ago. It was a text like this for a communications class. Someone thought I should take communications, so I did. I though it was all about me too!

Many people learn this stuff growing up, but I didn't. We didn't communicate really in my family. Love was something you get from someone. After taking that class I met the man of my dreams, and 10 years later we were married. Communications class helped, as well as other communication-oriented classes. Therapy helped too.

I never felt I could understand why people did what they did. This book is a start.
