Class warrior Marx was no pacifist and, except for the Communist Manifesto, no readable writer. Despite the disasters of Marxist proletarian dictatorships, Marx's ideas continue to attract those affronted by perceived economic injustice. Strathern briskly outlines Marx's inspiration in Hegelianism, which, from the garrets in which he lived most of his life, he inverted with the concept of dialectical materialism. His straight philosophy has remained more discussable than the economics of Das Kap ital for reasons that Strathern adduces; and as with all titles in this series, to illuminate the man behind the ideas, Strathern incorporates such angular details as Marx's pawning of his pants to buy cigars. About the Author
Paul Strathern is author of the popular and critically acclaimed Philosophers in 90 Minutes series. Highlights from the series include Nietzsche in 90 Minutes, Aristotle in 90 Minutes, and Plato in 90 Minutes. Mr. Strathern has lectured in philosophy and mathematics and now lives and writes in London. A former Somerset Maugham prize winner, he is also the author of books on history and travel as well as five novels. His articles have appeared in a great many newspapers, including the Observer (London) and the Irish Times. His own degree in philosophy came from Trinity College, Dublin.

Human History is the History of Class Struggle Based on Economics.

Highly readable and very approachable, true of each volume in this series.
This book, as well as the entire series, is light in terms philosophical exposition but highly readable and makes a good introduction as well as a good source for historical context and personal stories.
In being so thin a volume, which is at once the greatest virtue and greatest vice of this book, there is not much to review or there is simply too much be said about what is not said. I have thus presented one key take away from the book in the title to this review: Human history is the history of class struggle based on economics.

Best introduction to Marx I've seen

Loved this book. It gives a concise, unbiased view of Marx and Marxism, including details about Karl Marx's life, the times he lived in, and what shaped his beliefs. Includes a timeline and various quotations. I highly recommend this book as an introduction to Marxism. It's actually a fun read, and under 80 pages.

Biased

It started well, but after some pages Strathern starts to mix very reduced information about Marx's thought with personal attacks and tu quoque (hypocrisy) appeals. Worst, the attacks consist of irrelevant information about intimate details of Marx's life that may be inaccurate or mere gossips. Sure, it is perfectly right to include biographical data in a book like this one, but it is dishonest and false to use this data only to disqualify thoughts and theories.
It is very clear that the author is severely biased against this social thinker. It contains some interesting information, though. If you read this book, you should look also for a counterpart from a serious scholar.
