The Killing Zone, Second Edition: How & Why Pilots Die, by Paul Craig

WARNING!

Don't fly solo before you understand all the dangers of the killing zone.

It could save your life!

This survival guide for new pilots identifies the pitfalls waiting inside the killing zone, the period from 50 to 350 flight hours when they leave their instructors behind and fly as pilot in command for the first time. Although they're privately certified, many of these unseasoned aviators are unaware of the potential accidents that lie ahead while trying to build decision-making skills on their own -- many times falling victim to inexperience.

Based on the first in-depth scientific study of pilot behavior and general aviation flying accidents in over 20 years, The Killing Zone, Second Edition offers practical advice to help identify the time frame in which you are most likely to die. Author and aviation specialist Paul Craig offers rare insights into the special risks new pilots face and includes updated preventive strategies for flying through the killing zone . . . alive:

NEW to the Second Edition: Dealing with Glass Cockpits; GPS Moving Maps; Collision Avoidance Systems; including a new chapter on Available Safety versus Actual Safety

Alerts you to the 12 mistakes likely to kill you

Provides guidelines for avoiding, evading, diverting, correcting, and managing dangers

Includes a "Pilot Personality Self-Assessment Exercise" for an individualized survival strategy

About the Author

Dr. Paul A. Craig, a longtime pilot, flight instructor, aviation educator, and author, designed and conducted the extensive pilot study that uncovered the Killing Zone. Driven by a lifelong concern with the high accident rate among general aviation pilots, Dr. Craig has conducted research projects for universities, the FAA, and NASA that has targeted the problem. Since 2002, he has worked as the principal investigator for NASA projects investigating scenario-based flight training, competency-based flight training, Technically Advanced Aircraft, ADS-B implementation, and teamwork among aviation disciplines. Dr. Craig is an Airline Transport Pilot and Gold Seal Flight Instructor for multiengine, instrument, and seaplane. He has twice been named an FAA District Flight Instructor of the Year. Dr. Craig won the NASA “Turning Goals into Reality” award in 2005 and the Wheatley Award as the nation’s most outstanding aviation educator in 2004. He is a frequent speaker to flight instructors and others on improving flight training and safety. He is the author of Pilot in Command; Be a Better Pilot; Stalls & Spins; Multiengine Flying, 3rd Edition; and Controlling Pilot Error – Situation Awareness and Light Airplane Navigation Essentials.

Flawed Reasoning
By Seeker
It is utterly disturbing that this book has been written and marketed on a majorly flawed premise. The author basis his entire theory on "Data", yet the interpenetration of this data is utterly flawed at its core: The author "Proves" his killing-zone theory by comparing the death instances per year of pilots with various flight-hours logged. What he (so negligently) omits is the data on whether the amount of flying pilots in these categories are the equal or not.

From page 4, first paragraph:
"...But both sets of numbers, however, do indicate a spike in accidents in the 50 to 350-flight-hour range." and the references are to charts that state total accidents per year. I would like to ask the author "perhaps there's also a spike in flying hours in the 50 to 350-flight-hour range (pilots)?"

What bothers me most is that this book's primary pitch and title (quite a tabloid one, and as the author himself admits, it was not his preferred title of choice only that the publishers have pushed for it for marketing purposes) is all based on this terrible mistake.

From my perspective, there seems to be two options, either
1. This is a totally honest slip on the part of the author and his editors (highly unlikely).
2. They think the readers are (for the most part) not intelligent enough to catch the flaw (we are Pilots. Hello!).
After reading the entire book it is clear that the author is quite intelligent and it's very hard to believe that the former is the reason.

Perhaps this was only noticed by the author at an advanced point within the process of writing the book and at which the decision ( by the same publishers who pushed for the ridiculous title for the sake of marketing, or the author who's agreed to that ridiculous idea) was made to just go ahead anyway as the investment was already made and the book can still sell.

The book also has references to "training out" of the killing zone, almost implying that once you've accumulated a certain number of flight-hours (interchangeable with airmanship), you can sigh, recline and relax as you've now exited the killing-zone and you are quite safe. Firstly, we all know that nothing is that binary and that everything happens incrementally throughout a spectrum. Secondly, this idea flies in the face of the good advice we all get in flight training that a good pilot is always learning and that complacency is a big contributor to many problems.

It's almost like this author is pitching this killing-zone idea like one of these advertisements by a company claiming to solve (almost) all your problems with this simple product they have to offer. Well my friend, sorry. Life does not work like that, we have to earn our success and it happens incremental by continuous learning and seeking new ways to become better at what we're trying to achieve. And while there may be some good advice for some shortcuts, they will never be the replacement for good training and learning with diligence.

From the back cover of the book: "Don't fly solo before you understand all the dangers of the killing zone". Now does that not sound like utter marketing crap?!

The reason I give this one star and not zero:
Well... firstly it's not technically possible (thanks to clever/misleading marketing by amazon).
Secondly, I don't feel totally cheated of my time and money with this book (although I do quite some), as there IS some good information and advice in some parts of this book just as a good instructor advising his student (nothing you can't get elsewhere). But for that kind of read, I'd prefer Rick Durden's books which are far more enjoyable and present themselves as true and honest to what they are.

***Update***
I have noticed that my fundamental point in this review has been already called out (in a more eloquent and academic description) in the review of "William R. Knecht"

This book is neither a "Must read" nor a "Great book". It is far from any of those. Not sure why people are so quick and enthusiastic to make such bold statements on books that at best are informative and/or enjoyable.

It's not good enough to say
By Scott Stolnitz
Paul Craig brings to light and identifies a very important and vulnerable area for all of us learning to fly. The only thing really missing, but important, is "what critical thinking error and it's physical control mistakes" that inexperienced pilots actually make. It's not good enough to say, "......an inexperienced pilot stalled, resulting in the crash, etc".

A great addition would be, how "over time"," more experienced pilots were able to avoid those mistakes and prevent these incidents. Why did they "escape" the killing zone? What prevented the chain of errors in the case of most who learn to fly vs. those who often fail with tragic consequence. This is what would reduce the time any of us spend in the "Killing Zone".

My critique is definitely not a knock of Paul's book. I think it's excellent, but just wish it had gone a little further. It's the best I've found on the topic of low time pilot accidents. I highly recommend it.

Interesting, but based on wrong statistics
By William R. Knecht
Unfortunately, Craig repeatedly commits a rather serious statistical error in this book. He uses accident frequency counts, rather than accident rates, as the statistical basis for his conclusions about the range of the "killing zone." Frequency counts are interesting, of course, but they don't account for the number of pilots at each range of flight hours (which accounts for most of the effect he claims). Therefore, they say little about the risk that you yourself face as your flight experience increases. My concern is the nature of that zone, and that we use the right methodologies to explore the issue. You'll have to forgive me for being geeky about this. It's just that it's part of what I do for a well-known agency having to do with aviation (which can't be named, because I'm speaking here as a private citizen).
Statistically, rates aren't interchangeable with frequencies. Rates subtract the effect of how many individuals are present in each "bin" of a frequency distribution (in this case, the y-axis, where the x-axis would be flight hours). In fact, it appears that about 70% of the "zone" may be an artifact, and can be explained just by the fact that the frequency distribution of NON-accident pilots looks nearly identical to the distribution of accident pilots. See my paper http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001457513003242 regarding this. Or, see the free government technical report at https://www.faa.gov/data_research/research/med_humanfacs/oamtechreports/2010s/media/201503.pdf .

Bottom line: The kind of analysis we use on data like these is very tricky, is all I'm saying.

The RESOLVE framework integrates NLP's effective brief therapy and the personal encounter of psychotherapy. Using techniques that access the deeper structure of the brain for fast, permanent change, "RESOLVE" demonstrates how to: - identify the techniques that work for each client - create a relationship that empowers - introduce changes in life-approach - access inner skills, strategies and strengths - ensure that change occurs in the deeper brain structures where older patterns of behaviour were first laid down - recognise stages in the therapeutic process, and respond most effectively for that stage. Richard gives examples from his work with PTSD in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and with addictions, depression, anxiety conditions, personality disorders and psychoses in clinical practice in New Zealand and elsewhere. More than NLP as usual, A pragmatic approach for therapists and change consultants
By Richard F. Liotta
I am a Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D). I have used NLP as a component of what I do as a psychotherapist for many years. I think this book is excellent on several levels. It is an NLP book, but it is more than that. It comes from an NLP perspective and does very well explaining and synthesizing the use of the NLP in the context of psychotherapy. What is unique about the book is that it links NLP techniques with the models used by other forms of therapy. Further it sites research, gives quality examples, and makes connections between several diverse approaches.

First the book provides a useful discussion of how NLP relates to neurology. It discusses several aspects of the model (representational, systems, submodalities, emotional states, etc.) and relates it how the brain functions. A discussion of the state-dependent qualities of neural encoding and the implications of this for intervention was fascinating. I have read many NLP books and Dr. Bolstad's presentation of this material was the clearest, most science based, linkage between NLP and how the brain functions that I have read.

The next section of the book categorizes NLP interventions into ten categories (such as anchoring, tasking, and linguistic reframing etc.) and goes through each, gives a case example, and then describes how these processes are evident in other models of psychotherapy. This section left me wanting more, as it was both provocative and integrative.

The last major section of the book presents the RESOLVE model, which is essentially a brief solution focused psychotherapy approach, informed by NLP propositions (and presuppositions). Because of the ideas the author chooses to explain and explore this was much more than his slant on brief therapy. For instance he describes a Personal Strengths model, relating NLP terms to Jung's model of personality! The implications of his model to choosing the appropriate interventions are very useful and compelling.

In sum this book impressed me. It is packed with useful information, explanation, and ideas to consider. It is extensively referenced, citing research, other NLP developers' ideas, and indeed non-NLP models of change. This is not a book focused on NLP "pyrotechnics" (his term), rather it is integrative and practical. It notes that NLP frames are useful for explaining what therapist from many orientations do, while respecting what others do. Psychotherapist, NLP practitioners and trainers, and researchers should read this book. I recommend it very highly.

Insightful and Useful
By Susan Thrasher
I purchased this book a couple of years ago, shortly after doing my NLP training with author Richard Bolstad. I bought it thinking it would be a concise summary of what we'd learned under his tutelage. (Richard, incidentally, is an outstanding teacher.) At first, for practical purposes, I found myself referring more to Richard's extensive course manuals. But with time, this book has become more and more for me a profoundly useful source of guidance, inspiration, and understanding.

This is probably not the ideal book for the casual layman who knows nothing about NLP or therapy and just wants to learn a little about it. It IS a good book for anyone--with NLP experience or not--who is working with clients in a therapeutic setting. It IS a very worthwhile purchase for anyone studying psychology at university-level who wants a better understanding of how and why we think and behave the way we do, and how changes in thinking and behaviour can occur, resolving many of life's issues. Bolstad's summary of what's going on behind psychological "dis-eases" like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and addiction is more concise, useful and insightful than anything I encountered in the standard psychology texts I studied at uni. And of course "Resolve" IS an excellent book for anyone with an NLP background who wants a solid, well-researched summary of the basics in this under-rated field of therapy.

Packed with clear explanations, real-life examples, and sound summaries of research, this book bears repeated readings and dippings-into.

In Scaling Up Excellence, bestselling author Robert Sutton and Stanford colleague Huggy Rao tackle a challenge that determines every organization’s success: scaling up farther, faster, and more effectively as a program or an organization creates a larger footprint.  Sutton and Rao have devoted much of the last decade to uncovering what it takes to build and uncover pockets of exemplary performance,  to help spread them, and to keep recharging organizations with ever better work practices.  Drawing on inside accounts and case studies and academic research from a wealth of industries – including start-ups, pharmaceuticals, airlines, retail, financial services, high-tech, education, non-profits, government, and healthcare -- Sutton and Rao identify the key scaling challenges that confront every organization.  They tackle the difficult trade-offs that organizations must make between “Buddhism” versus “Catholicism” -- whether to encourage individualized approaches tailored to local needs or to replicate the same practices and customs as an organization or program expands.  They reveal how the best leaders and teams develop, spread, and instill the right mindsets in their people -- rather than ruining or watering down the very things that have fueled successful growth in the past.  They unpack the principles that help to cascade excellence throughout an organization, as well as show how to eliminate destructive beliefs and behaviors that will hold them back.

Scaling Up Excellence is the first major business book devoted to this universal and vexing challenge.  It  is destined to become the standard bearer in the field.

Amazon.com Review
Author One-on-One: Robert Suttonand Huggy Rao talk about Scaling Up Excellence

Robert Sutton: Why don’t we start off with why we wrote this book?

Huggy Rao: We wanted to give the executives we teach and advise better answers. In 2006, we launched an executive education program at Stanford called Customer-focused Innovation. Executives in the program kept asking us different versions of the same question. Their companies all had a pocket or two where people were customer focused. The problem was that there just wasn’t enough of it. They asked how they could spread such excellence and do it fast. We scoured academic research and practical books on leaders and teams. We found a lot on topics such as leadership and innovation. But we couldn’t find a single business book devoted to this problem, which we started calling “the problem of more” or the challenge of “scaling up excellence.”

We spent the next seven years studying and writing about it. I believe that this is the first major business or leadership book on scaling. We worked hard to write an approachable and useful book, but also one that digs into this vexing challenge in some depth. We offer much hard won advice, but no instant and easy cures.

Bob, why don’t you tell people about our research? It was quite an adventure.

RS: We started by doing interviews and case studies, and digging up the most rigorous studies we could find on scaling. But we also wanted to reach out to people who were in the thick of scaling challenges. So we checked repeatedly with senior leaders such as Kaiser Permanente’s Louise Liang (who led a successful information technology rollout in the largest U.S. private healthcare system), Facebook executive’s Chris Cox and Mike Schroepfer (who grew the engineering organization), and JetBlue Airlines pilot and executive Bonny Simi (who led a bottom-up effort to create and scale up a better system for dealing with operational challenges caused by bad weather). We wanted to make sure that the challenges we discussed, the stories we told, and advice we offered rang true to these and hundreds of other scaling up veterans we talked to during those seven years.

HR: What do you say when people ask you “what do you mean by scaling?”

RS: I tell them that we fixed our focus on a simple, but tough, question: If your organization has a bit of excellence, a pocket of goodness, how do you spread it? Early on in the project, I saw an interview with the famous folk singer Pete Seeger. He said something like “Sometimes the only thing wrong with it is there isn’t enough of it.” A lovely way to describe the main problem we tackled.

HR: I was struck by how similar the scaling challenges were that different organizations faced. The challenges of growing Google, of opening 180 highly standardized Bridge International Academy schools for poor children in Africa, and spreading practices for preventing infections to over 3000 hospitals sound quite different on first blush. But they turned out to be remarkably similar in many ways once we looked closely.

RS: How so?

HR: In every case, successful scaling didn’t mean just creating as big a footprint as possible, as fast possible – it required spreading a shared mindset that guided how people thought and acted. We learned that, especially in cases of fast and effective scaling, the teams that guided these efforts often slowed down at key junctures – to think about what they are doing and to develop true excellence – so they could move faster later. Scaling takes both patience and persistence, in concert with an obsessive focus on making progress toward long term goals every hour of every day.

RS: We also learned that the key decisions and scaling principles were remarkably similar across different kinds of organizations. For example every organization and project gets more complex as it expands. More processes, layers, locations, and people are required. As a result, scaling nearly always adds “cognitive load” -- increased demands -- on people and teams. If it is not dealt with well, people feel overwhelmed. It becomes hard to get simple things done. In the best organizations, to paraphrase Twitter’s head of engineering Chris Fry, leaders use the hierarchy to destroy bad bureaucracy -- to make things easier rather than harder for people. Fry’s advice holds in every scaling case we studied.

RS: Let’s end with the question that EVERYONE asks me about you. Is your name really Huggy?

HR: My real name is Hayagreeva, but my family and friends have always called me Huggy. I thought “Huggy” would be easier for people to pronounce and remember.

RS: It’s been quite a collaboration. Huggy was relentlessly optimistic during even the toughest days. Huggy is among the smartest and most imaginative organizational researchers on the planet. The rate at which he generates ideas astounds me. One minute he might be talking about “linking hot causes to cool solution,” the next “scaling is about going from bad to great, not so much good to great.”

We worked with so many terrific people facing scaling challenges, from entrepreneurs and startups, to senior executives at big corporations, to leaders and teams in nonprofits and large healthcare systems. But we stayed focused on one goal: Writing a book would ring true and be useful to anyone who strives to develop excellence in organizations and spreading it to others.

Informative, Compelling, Valuable!
By Terri L. Griffith
Sutton and Rao offer a comprehensive guide to management in a package of enticing stories, subtly supported by references to high-end research. Their personal history in the Silicon Valley and their global access to interesting organizations provides the backdrop.

MAIN THEME & WHO SHOULD READ
The main theme is that, while many good practices exist in organizations, they either get lost or there are difficulties when attempts are made to spread them (scale them) across the organization. The breadth of this theme means that this book will provide value to anyone who would like to see organizations improve. The benefits are not limited by industry, functional area, or organizational size.

KEY IDEAS: THE SEVEN MANTRAS
Sutton and Rao are far more direct than most academics; it often takes a lot to get a professor away from an “it depends” answer. In this instance they have enough background to be confident with the following:

We’ve identified reliable signs that scaling is going well or badly, and we’ve distilled these signals into seven mantras. If you are embarking on a scaling effort [I’ll add if you are doing anything to make your organization better], memorize them, teach them to others, and invent ways to keep them firmly in focus -- especially when the going gets rough.

Spread a mindset, not just a footprint. This first one is their, and your, protection against being labeled a fad.
Engage all the senses. From my perspective, this is where you consider how to weave together human, technical, and organizational practices such that they work together, not against your goals. It’s also where I realize that my presentation of these ideas is much less colorful, and perhaps less likely to scale.
Link short-term realities to long-term dreams. Organizations that can do this have mastered ambidexterity -- the ability to both get work done now, and not let that get in the way of great things in the future. (In my mind, this is a precursor to solving the The Innovator's Dilemma.)
Accelerate accountability. This one sings to me as a focus on transparency. I’ve asked in the past, “What evidence, tools, and techniques do people in mainstream organizations think they need to move in this direction?” The examples provided here may move us closer to my ideal.
Fear the clusterfug. Yes, they are using a euphemism, but it gets across that we can't allow even mundane bad things to get worse. Speak up. For those wanting to use their business research background: Don’t escalate commitments to bad situations. Think about the Denver baggage-handling fiasco and fear a similar outcome on your watch.
Scaling requires both addition and subtraction. This ties directly to the idea of managing for now and for the future. Sometimes activities that have worked to create excellence stop working as you scale. As Sutton and Rao note, having an all-hands meeting every week makes great sense for a small organization, but you are likely to have to shift the form of this activity as you grow. Information flow and commitment are still important, but you need to be willing to find new ways that fit your growth.
Slow down to scale faster--and better-- down the road. I completely agree. I am wondering why, in my writing, I start with this one (in the form of “Stop-Look-Listen”), and yet they end with it. Perhaps thinking of this as a list is the problem. It’s not a list, it’s a cycle or a weaving, which also goes along with their borrowing Michael Dearing’s image of whether this is Buddhism versus Catholicism (see Chapter 2).

APPLY THESE IDEAS
My goal with this review is to get you to read the book. You will benefit. Your organization will benefit. The next time I teach a general graduate management class, Scaling Up Excellence will be a required reading.

I’m still trying to decide how much experience in organizations you need to have to gain value from their ideas -- and I’d love your opinion. Is this a book to help undergraduates trying to understand the complexities of organizations? If you are a mentor, is this a book you would suggest to a person in their first full-time job? Without a doubt it’s a book I’d give to someone taking on a new leadership role at any level.

One of the Best Business Books I've Ever Read
By Wally Bock
Full disclosure. You should know that I’m a friend of Bob Sutton’s. You should also know that I’m a fan. I’m a fan because of the great work that he does, and Scaling Up Excellence is an example of his best work.

That’s saying a lot. He’s done a couple of books with Jeffrey Pfeffer, including Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths, and Total Nonsense and The Knowing-Doing Gap. He’s done books on his own, including the book that The New York Times won’t print the full title of and Good Boss, Bad Boss. All of those books are excellent. Scaling Up Excellence: Getting to More Without Settling for Less, written with Huggy Rao, is the best one yet.

Who Should Read This Book

If you’re a manager in a mid-sized to large company, this book should be required reading for you. It’s how to take the pockets of excellence that form in almost every organization and spread them across the landscape.

If you’re a manager in a small organization or you’re interested in how organizations work, you’ll love this book, too. Scaling Up Excellence is so well-researched and has so many examples/stories that anyone who is interested in how human beings work in groups will find value here.

In the preface to the book, Sutton and Rao lay out the subject.

“We started calling it the Problem of More. Executives could always point to pockets in their organizations where people were doing a great job of uncovering and meeting customer needs. There was always some excellence— there just wasn’t enough of it. What drove them crazy, kept them up at night, and devoured their workdays was the difficulty of spreading that excellence to more people and more places.”

What’s in The Book

The preface lays out the basic challenge of the book, after which there are eight chapters divided into three sections. The first section is “Setting the Stage.”

Chapter one is about what the authors call the most important lesson they learned: “Scaling ought to be treated as a ground war, not just an air war.”

The ground war analogy is good, because it implies that you must get down in the dirt and do it. You can’t do it from afar using technology. The ground war analogy is also good for a reason that the authors don’t mention. When you’re in a ground war, there are two things you don’t know: how or when it will end.

The first chapter also includes the authors’ seven scaling mantras.

1. Spread a mindset, not just a footprint.
2. Engage all the senses.
3. Link short-term realities to long-term dreams.
4. Accelerate accountability.
5. Fear the clusterfug. (Yes, you read that right)
6. Scaling requires both addition and subtraction.
7. Slow down to scale faster – and better – down the road.

Chapter two looks at the scaling choices and tradeoffs. The primary distinction the authors make here is between “Catholic” and “Buddhist” strategies. The Catholic model seeks to create organizations that conform to some original model. The Buddhist approach encourages local experimentation and variation.

Section two has the next five chapters, which involve key scaling principles. Here’s a list of the chapters.

Chapter three: Hot Causes, Cool Solutions
Chapter four: Cut Cognitive Load But Deal with Necessary Complexity
Chapter five: The People Who Propel Scaling
Chapter six: Connect People and Cascade Excellence Using Social Bonds to Spread the Right Mindset
Chapter seven: Bad Is Stronger Than Good

The third section, “Parting Points,” has only one chapter about how to put all this to work. This chapter brings together things discussed throughout the book like team makeup and size, and implementation strategies. It seemed to me that there are two important things to keep in mind. First, this is a long-term process. It won’t be quick and it won’t be easy. Second, there will be times when it seems like nothing is going to work, but just like in a ground war, you strap on your gear and you keep going.

Bottom Line

I think Scaling Up Excellence: Getting to More Without Settling for Less is one of the best business books I’ve ever read. Period. I read it originally a couple of years ago, but I keep going back to it to dip into the research and the insights and mine the stories for more knowledge. My bottom line is simple: if you read business books, read this one.

Thoughtful insights to a complex issue
By Jesse Lahey
This is quite a different from many business books available.

It’s not a short, light, easy read -- it’s about twice as long as many business bestsellers. However, it’s well-written and fun to read, with plenty of real-life stories and details that kept me turning the pages.

Nor does it try to distill the research findings into a simple recipe or defined set of principles. Bob and Huggy’s research showed that scaling up is a complex issue; and so in their book, they wanted to avoid giving the impression that a simple recipe like “5 steps to scaling” would guarantee success. There aren’t tips that will work in every situation. Instead, the book provides themes, principles, and examples, so you can think about which specific things will work for your organization.

Even the seven “scaling mantras” mentioned in many of the other reviews don’t capture the book’s truths … that was just an exercise to shape your mindset as you started the book.

If you want a quick roadmap to follow (which may or may not actually work), go read a different book. If you want thoughtful insights that to a complex issue, with proven ideas to consider for your organization, and meaningful litmus tests to determine whether you’re on the right track at any point in time (before it’s too late), this is the book for you.

Here are just a few of my favorite take-aways from Scaling Up Excellence:

It’s a ground war, not just an air war: bombarding people with a training session or quick communication campaign doesn’t work; it requires pressing each person, division, and group to make one small change after another in what they believe, feel, or do.

Starting with a full working prototype (rather than theory) that your people can see

Connect-and-cascade process: going beyond the usual “cascading through the management ranks” by using social bonds to spread the right mindset

Guardrail strategy: specifying as few constraints as you possibly can—picking those precious few that matter most and pack the biggest wallop, and then leaving people to steer between and around them as they see fit.

Striking the right balance between Catholicism (replication) and Buddhism (customization) for your organization and goals

Once is not enough, and One is not enough: the best leaders find themselves saying things over and over, in a variety of ways and through a variety of methods

Team size: creating a team that’s too large is the biggest mistake leaders make

Case study: Kaiser Permanente shifting mindset from hospital-as-hub to home-as-hub model of health care

From Library Journal
Kritek (chair, mental health nursing and management, Univ. of Texas Sch. of Nursing, Galveston) received a National Leadership Fellowship from the Kellogg Foundation in 1986 to study conflict resolution. That study gave birth to this "record of lessons from [her] life experiences at uneven tables," i.e., negotiations where one side has power over another. Including examples from her own experiences as the nondominant negotiator, Kritek intends to encourage dialog about "dominant power." Rather than offering practical methods for achieving equality, she suggests ten "ways of being" (e.g., "be a truth teller," "be innovative") to provide a philosophical context for nondominant negotiators to use when approaching uneven tables. Unfortunately, Kritek's penchant for rambling philosophical reflections leads to writing that is verbose, repetitive, and prone to digression and forces the reader to look hard for substance. Not recommended.

Negotiating at an Uneven Table: Developing Moral Courage in
By A Customer
Negotiating at an Uneven Table has become a vital tool for my personal self actualization, professional communication, and daily growth. After reading this book, it is clear to see that most, if not all, tables are uneven. Regardless of which side of the table your on, Dr. Kritek provides tools for honest and successful negotiation. Her examples of the valleys and mountain top experiences and tables of life bring the actual events of life into a different and clearer perspective. Her words are honest and direct while being full of compassion. The chapter regarding manipulation has been espicially critical in assisting me identifing common techniques used by myself and others to control life. I strongly suggest this book for anyone sincerely interested in becoming a more honest, compassionate, and fullfilled person. Regardless of your profession, negotiation is a part of living and daily communication. Dr. Kritek provides a perspective to understand what is occouring and how to arrive at a win-win outcome. If winning is not an option, she helps to identify this reality and show you when to walk away.

The last Renaissance man
By David Bonesteel
In addition to being a legendary science-fiction writer, Isaac Asimov is one of the most successful science popularizers of all time, and this book demonstrates why. In it, he delivers a comprehensive, well-organized, well-written survey of the known sciences as of the time of publication. But, since that time was over twenty years ago, is his book still worth reading today? Of course, it is! This is because Asimov takes a historical approach, first explaining the initial questions that puzzled observers of the natural world, then following the research of talented and brilliant scientists over the centuries that brought us to our present-day understanding. This lends much of the text the fascination of a mystery story, and gives the attentive reader a good basic grounding in the sciences.

One for the ages
By C. L.
This book is a kind of executive summary of the state of science as of 1984, and like most executive summaries, this one doesn't require you to be a genius to understand it.

Although the book is meticulously organized into sections and has both name and subject indexes, the best way to read it is from cover to cover. There is actually a kind of narrative structure that underpins the whole thing.

The book is divided into the physical sciences and the biological sciences, and the progression in one section mirrors that in the other. The physical sciences section goes from big to small -- from the universe as a whole to the stars, to the solar system, to the earth, and from there to progressively smaller matters: the elements, particles and energy. The biological sciences section goes from small to big -- from organic molecules to cells, to microorganisms, to the body, and then to the species, evolution and the human mind.

Ideas build one upon the other. So, for example, by the time Asimov introduces you to the periodic table in Chapter 6, you're already familiar with X-rays because he discussed them in Chapter 2, when he was talking about radio astronomy. By the time he discusses the chemical structure of organic molecules in Chapter 11, you're already an old hand when it comes to electron transfers because Asimov covered the idea thoroughly in Chapter 6.

Asimov was never shy about his own accomplishments, and he didn't hesitate to cite himself in the book, such as discussing his 1955 insight into the importance of carbon 14 in the human body and his Three Laws of Robotics in the section on artificial intelligence. Throughout, the writing is wonderfully clear and lively.

A few quibbles. First, it's a 30-year-old book, and so there are some things that scientists have changed their minds about, such as the psychological nature of XYY males. There are also a few typos and errors, and for this, the publishers who failed to fix them after 30 years surely deserve blame. For example, the Chinese-American biochemist Cho Hao Li, who synthesized human-growth hormone in 1970, is listed under the "Cs" in the name index, and not the "Ls" as he should be.

Another problem is that the paperback edition was apparently photocopied from the hardcover. This means that the periodic table, for example, which had shaded the rare earth series to set them apart, is illegible in the paperback, since the shaded sections appear as black bars. (This is a minor problem, since in today's world, any reader can find a periodic table on the Web.)

But what really strikes me is how well the book still holds up after three decades, and I'm not entirely sure that that's a good thing. I think if Asimov were alive today, it would take him fewer than 50 additional pages to cover all the changes since 1984, and this is with a book that's 802 pages without the appendix. If Asimov were to rise from the grave, I can't help but think he'd want to know: "What have you people been doing for the past 30 years?"

4th edition, reprint of 1984 edition
By Charles E. Tomlinson
I believe this has no updates from 1984 edition. Revised probably means from earlier editions or corrections of typos. So if you think publication date of 1993 means more info like I did, save your money.
