Interesting and well explained

Good clear and concise explanations on elastic theory and its application to Geotechnics. Includes worked examples that help illustrate the process of application to real world problems. I found that this was a good addition as often you're presented with analytical solutions to various geotechnical problems, without any explanation of the genesis.

This is a great introductory text for the subject of elasticity applied to geomaterials. Don't take intorductory to mean simple - the reader should be familiar with fundamental concepts of mechanics, material behavior, hydraulics, and soil mechanics. The book would make a nice text (of a couple) for a graduate level course in applied geomechanics. Couple this text with the authors' "Plasticity..." text, and you have a great primer on the subject.

In far too many cases public school teaching has declined from a calling, to a profession, to a job, to make work for the otherwise unemployable.

Of course there is and hopefully always will be a dedicated core of public school teachers in it for the right reasons. One prays they are still the majority, but one has serious doubts. One way you can contribute to fixing the problem as opposed to just grousing about it is to encourage those with the necessary dedication and purpose and talent to make teaching their career, either in public or private schools, and one way to do that is to give them the gift of inspiration and good advice Horace Mann first gave in 1840, as part of his Fourth Annual Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education, that is every bit as relevant today, arranged topically into four different sections.

The first is entitled herein "Knowledge of Studies". "Teachers should have a perfect knowledge of the rudimental branches which are required by law to be taught in our schools." No keeping one lesson ahead of the class is going to be acceptable to old Horace! Of course the wide increase in knowledge to be imparted today arguably requires a greater degree of specialization than Horace might have been comfortable with, but at the minimum a teacher should know his or her area of expertise backwards and forwards, if only in order to better catch subtle errors before they become ingrained errors.

The second is entitled herein "Aptness to Teach". Not everyone who knows a subject can teach it. Part of the process of deciding whether or not to go into teaching is determining whether one has that aptness or not, and this section will help one to determine this as it argues its necessity.

The third is entitled herein "The Art of Managing a Classroom". Not everyone who knows a subject and possesses an aptness for teaching can manage a classroom, but to a greater extent than is the case with aptness to teach, managing a classroom is something that can be learned and reading this section is a good start.

The last is entitled herein "Molding Good Behavior". Besides making the usual arguments for the importance of molding good behavior as a teacher, this short section offers an intriguing caution about imparting one's own eccentricities to one's students. In our "do your own thing" world this might be the hardest sell of all, but it doesn't hurt to be reminded that children are impressionable and one should always be careful about what one is impressing.

Note: One could complain that this book is available online for free. Well, yes, what part of in the public domain do you not understand? However, trying to get away with giving someone a printout as a gift will earn you the nickname of cheapskate. If all you want to do is read it yourself, then by all means stick to the free sites. However, if you are looking for a way to get through to someone else, you are better off buying a copy, and a solitary sawbuck for this sturdy pocket-sized reprint is going to be tough to beat. Good read if you're looking for Horace Mann's thoughts on the teacher's role in the classroom. This book does not discuss Mann's thoughts on universal public education.

Easy, insightful read. Shocking views at times, but expected due to time written. His views were clear, though, and so it's easy to follow and comprehend. Recommend this book to anyone studying the early minds in education.

Forays into the Theory of Physics

Marian Apostol demonstrates here again to me that he is a tempered director of research, neither afraid of orthodoxy nor avoidant of novelty. I am satisfied by the ample demonstration here that he does not fall into the trap of establishment anti-intellectualism. He does not "Shut up and calculate." Instead he is eager to relate each of these articles and the whole collection to the philosophical quest that goes back to the classical Greeks: what is change?

The great theme in these forays is the variational principle; for real physics, the action is at a stationary point. He can then, for instance, show how inevitably results from this classical principle convert into the domain of quantum effects; the Unruh effect (the temperature of an apparently accelerated vacuum) is implied as a matter of course. I am reminded for myself that this variational principle is equivalent to the main result in the physics of geometry, that sources of gravity travel along geodesics.

This collection of essays makes for an important resource after the main text in an advanced course on theoretical physics.

ERNEST GLITCH. Wealthy Victorian experimentalist, armaments mogul, aficionado of intoxication and big game hunting. His mansion in Weardale, England, had laboratory facilities second to none in the mid eighteen hundreds. In them Glitch, with his assistant Hodges, performed scientific experimentation of a most eclectic nature, and always with concentrated disregard to safety issues.

An eccentric and volatile person, his pursuit of knowledge was accompanied by the sort of hedonism only the very rich can enjoy. The results of experiments he and his assistant Hodges undertook were never published. As he kept no log-book, the main record of the discoveries they made are the letters he wrote to Michael Faraday.

In this book, those letters are presented, together with contemporary reports, a journal Glitch made of his expedition to Africa, and several narratives of his life. Also, reference is made to both his ancestors and, in detail, his descendants. This novel has two threads. One details the horrific experiments performed by Victorian Ernest Glitch and his assistant Hodges. The other is set in the near future, where Glitch and Hodges' descendants wreak havoc, with a device capable of generating enormous power from the annihilation of nuclear waste.

WARNING - Contains very strong language. The letters and accounts of the work of Ernest Glitch are of an appalling nature in parts, containing references to animal and human experimentation, extreme violence, Victorian drug abuse, and complete disregard for the dignity of native peoples. 135 thousand words.

Quick starts and long term benefits

Alex's voice comes through loud and clear and it's a smart, encouraging and confident voice that makes you believe you can get the results you want. I like that his "How to" chapters range from techniques that take mere seconds to those that take up to 15 minutes. His reminder that to think on two tracks is effective: the one-to-one and the one-to-many. I've already become clearer about which of my marketing efforts should be in which track and how I can execute quickly.

The first technique I used--including a testimonial in my email signature--has caught the attention of quite a few correspondents. And the "By the way, did you know I also do..." has lead to several requests for more information.

I'm just beginning to enjoy value from this book and I anticipate much more.

How can this book NOT be for everyone? For-profit corporation, non-profit, government agency -- Alex's ideas are clearly written, elegantly presented, powerfully persuasive, and absolutely relevant and applicable to your situation, whatever it is.

The power of his ideas lie in their simplicity and actionability. As I read the book, I found over a dozen ideas that I could (and should) implement immediately. And with his framework, taking action is surprisingly easy. The Revenue Growth Habit is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in both strengthening relationships with their existing customers and making it easier to acquire new ones.

Buy this book. You won't regret it.

Great book, easy read, and answered all my questions

For starters I'm in between a novice and a pro with several hundred thousand photos under my belt and a pretty good knowledge of my (dated) Rebel XTi. After finally realizing my dream of owning an EOS 6D (yeah!) the reality set in that there were a number of features that I didn't have experience with or understand, that I wouldn't master from reading the manual, and that even if I figured it out I'd probably not be utilizing it to the fullest extent. I wanted a book that didn't just repeat the information in the manual, gave insight into the ways a pro would use the feature in real life, and didn't spend time in other areas like photo composition, etc. If this sounds familiar then this is the book for you!

I found David Busch's coverage of the camera and associated features very well organized, logical, and at the appropriate depth. It's a great reminder of things you may already know (e.g. Tv and Av modes) to things you may not have realized (like how the two different focus systems work and their strengths/weaknesses). For instance, I never knew that the focus dots had a vertical, horizontal (or both) orientation but ALAS it immediately explained why I had that hard time focusing on that subject the other day!

This book goes through your EOS 6D from top to bottom, but does it in a logical and intuitive way. His writing style is plain and effective which makes even the most difficult features easy to digest.

I think the best summary was stated somewhere before along these lines: the manual tells you what the features do, but if you want to know when/how to use those features you will need a good book and this is the one!

The book that really opens up capability of Canon EOS 6D

After purchasing my new Canon EOS 6D (WG) and reading the supplied factory user manual, I was not satisfied with the content and details of that manual. So David Busch's Canon 6D Digital SLR photography was the excellent resource to complete the necessary knowledge anyone should have if you want to take advantage of all the technical sophistication this camera can deliver. This is my first full-frame DSLR and the second Canon DSLR that I have been using for the last 10 years (EOS 20D). One thing is for sure, reading the explanations of any controls and buttons in this camera could be very beneficial but you have to use them many times and experience the feel and behavior of this device. I have just started to feel a little more comfortable with 6D after shooting my first 250 exposures outside and inside with my Canon 580EX Speedlite. The only thing I would say that David Busch did not really emphasized the advantage of shooting in RAW format. However, he said that raw images would give you more freedom to do post-processing of your photos. Another thing he never mentioned about Light Room as the most popular photo editing software. He was advising to use Canon EOS Digital software that was included with the camera or just using Adobe Photoshop. When you choose RAW quality of your images, you end up capturing about 22 to 24 MB of data for each file. Yes, you would need larger SD memory cards but I think the benefits of shooting in RAW overweight the additional expense of like 64 GB SDHC card. He is professional sport and events photographer so he usually ends up shooting thousands of images at one session so he uses L-fine JPEG quality that gives him more images per card and he does not want to spend too much time post-processing them. Even when I go to overseas vacation for 2 weeks, the maximum number of images I usually shoot is about 600 to 800. I always try to think and take a little more time before I squeeze that shutter release button to create the best photo I could take. Now it's going to be easy to come up with the creative photos I really want to take. In conclusion, David's book is the must to have combined with many hours of practicing all the modes and custom functions this Canon EOS 6D can give you.

Good Summary

This is the second David Busch book I have purchased, and I think he does a very good job of supplementing the Canon manual. To some extent, perhaps to a large extent, the contents of his books are recycled through many different camera models because he is teaching the same principles of photography over and over again regardless of the specific camera model the book targets. Of course he does adapt it to each specific model as well. Speaking of models, that's not a bad business model! But, nevertheless, among the several different books of the same genre, I believe this is the best one.
