complete pictures, explanation and graphs

Alas, my book is falling apart! The color plates are coming out because I like to browse them so much. The designs here are authentic and there is a good discussion of the origin of the designs whether Persia, the Caucasus, Afghanistan or Baluchistan. The author identifies even the tribes. He discusses how the graphs can be used for needlepoint, cross stitch, afghans or even actual rugs. Highly recommended. I would also recommend the following as companion books:

A journey through death and what might lie beyond ...

I first read John Hick about 12 years ago and this was the first of his books. My understanding of Christianity in general and the nature of life and death in particular were significantly altered by this book and others by Hick.
Imagine taking a ride through the various theories of life after death as presented by various religions, each one being presented so that you say, "Wow -- now this is it." Hick, in his masterful way, then says, "No, not really, and here's why..." So, throughout the book (although the first 200 pages are less thrilling)you are being led through this maze all the time wondering if, by the time the book ends, you're doing be presented with something that makes sense. The ride is worth it -- you are well rewarded.
Again, nearly anything by Hick is worth reading, but this is a book to settle down into and give yourself up to. It's not light reading by any means, but it is fascinating.

Thought Provoking

If Christians are looking for support for their Hellenized version of the afterlife, this is not the book to provide that. But if you are open to exploring new ideas and philosophy that is compatible with a Christian faith, but maybe not consistent with its history, this book is a great read. I thought more about the afetr life, our ideas of it, and why we believe the way we do, while reading this book, than any other book I have read. The book should be part of any Christian library, not because it supports your view, but because it helps you think more deeply about them. I finished the book, not agreeing with Hick's final conclusion, but thankful for spending the time to read what he wrote.

He specifically examines immortality (survival of a disembodied mind),
resurrection (a new life in another form),
and reincarnation (a new life in a different body).
Heaven and reincarnation may not be as far apart as they seem at first.
Hick finally invents his own hypothesis of several lives after death,
thru which we might reach moral and spiritual fulfillment.
An interesting and well-informed book.

Conventional wisdom has it that John Kenneth Galbraith's The Affluent Society spawned the neoliberalism we see in Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, and other world leaders. The economist's prose, lofty but still easily manageable, laid down the gauntlet for the post-cold war class struggle that was still far in the future in 1958. Galbraith saw the widening gap between the richest and the poorest as an emergent threat to economic stability, and proposed significant investment in parks, transportation, education, and other public amenities--what we now call infrastructure--to ameliorate these differences and postpone depression and revolution indefinitely. Widely criticized by conservatives and libertarians wary of public expenditures or increased government influence, Galbraith still influences liberal and neoliberal thinking. He has acknowledged that his work, like that of most social scientists, contains flaws (like his dire prediction of an out-of-control unemployment and inflation spiral that petered out in the 1980's), but much of it remains fresh and true even today. Four years before Silent Spring, he wrote about the consumerist blight that threatened our wild lands equally as much as our cities; his hoped-for increase in environmental awareness has grown significantly in recent years. About the Author
John Kenneth Galbraith has written 30 books, spanning four decades. He has been awarded honorary degrees from Harvard, Oxford, the University of Paris and Moscow University. College required text

Used at Western Washington University in 2011. Certainly a more liberal view of economics, but one worth reading and thinking deeply about. It's interesting how many of these topics have come even more to the forefront in the last 5 years, and how the discussion has changed, evolved, and collapsed in some cases. Readers of this book should not be limited to economists - it is relevant to all of us and valuable to learn more.

Great Book...

I was disappointed when I first received this book because I was searching for the Easton Press version of the same book. The picture that is shown is an Easton Press version of this book. That is a very difficult thing for me about AMAZON is that they don't distinguish much between books for collectors. Now that being said... The Franklin Press Version is a very nice book and it was just as described. (Other than that the seller didn't distinguish that this was a Franklin Press Book).
