Highly Readible and Engaging - Wanted more

This little book is a highly readable and engaging literary adaptation of the TNT/Spielberg epic film. I found the book extremely absorbing, providing adequate additional background and exposition on the characters and events in the 1840s-1890s westward expansion saga. The book (like the film) bounces back and forth between Lakota and white settler perspectives - I guess I was somewhat disappointed as this could have been written in more epic novel or novel series format (the story and characters "scream" for a John Jakes type treatment a la "North and South").
The Lakota portion of the story - centering on a medicine man named Loved by the Buffalo is esp. engaging. In the film, Lakota historian and story-teller Joseph Marshall provides a wonderful a wonderful narrative - the book captures this Lakota oral tradition in story telling perfectly (at least for the Native American portion).

Into the West

This was a wonderful miniseries, so I was very excited to read the book. The book was GREAT! It followed very closely with the movie and gave more insight into the characters and story line. An easy and enjoyable read!

Enjoyed the series; the book..not so much.

I enjoyed the series, but the edition of the book I have is full of spelling errors and even some major historical ones. On page 177, for instance, it states "Kansas was part of the territory ceded by Mexico a decade and a half earlier, and as the territory slipped closer to statehood, the delicate balance of power between free and slave states began to tip." Kansas was part of the Lousiana Purchase in 1803 and was not ceded by Mexico. Sloppy research, sloppy proof reading, but a thrilling read anyway. It will probably be a better experience if you also watch the series.
