That’s no easy feat. Jeff Brooks understands that to write well

Fundraising writing is a nuanced being with its own unique set of rules. After all, this kind writing involves profoundly moving people in an emotional way so that as a result, they’re motivated to give money to your organization. That’s no easy feat. Jeff Brooks understands that to write well, one must abandon everything (or almost everything) that they were taught about formal writing. While this is often easier said than done, I do have some tricks up my sleeve, and now, I’ve added Jeff’s amazing new Emerson & Church book, How to Turn Your Words Into Money: The Master Fundraiser's Guide to Persuasive Writing, to my arsenal of tools.

If your goal is to write some epic fundraising content, look no further.

Jeff does an expert job of teaching you how to break down any mental barriers you have so that you can seamlessly transition from formal writing to writing that packs a colossal emotional punch. Jeff has done it again! Another great, easy read. I think one of the best things about Jeff Brooks' books are that they are as easy and interesting to read as the ideal fundraising letters that he tells us about. This latest book had a great new revelation to me that I hadn't yet grasped in his previous two books, which is great because it just shows how much everyone can still learn and grow in fundraising.

This is another great book to have in your organization's library to help train new employees or to educate others outside of fundraising about what works. Thanks Jeff, please continue writing more books!

I've been working out for over 10 years, and have sometimes wondered whether it is possible to achieve serious results without resorting to pharmaceutical assistance (if I may put it that way). This book gives a really useful overview of the workout regimes and approaches of the pre-steroid weight-lifters. It's a eye-opener. The book is premised on the fact that the classic muscle-building guys from the pre-steroids days couldn't cheat - so they worked hard and worked right. Andora gives a concise breakdown of what they did to achieve the results they did, and how we can maintain constant growth and strength gain using those same techniques. In fact, if you, like me, have tried 'everything', and are looking for help from real experts, this is a good book to refer to - it's well-research and cleverly put together, includes loads of tips on nutrition, training programs, and is filled with quotes from the legends like Steve Reeves and Vince Gironda. I found this book really useful.

Don't sleep on this book.

I feel the need to fully disclose two items. One, I grew up in Northern California, in the 80’s, spending the first twenty years of my life there. That could make one bias in reading a book called Norcal that takes place in the 80’s. Which leads me to my second disclosure. I am a professional screenwriter who also teaches at UCLA in the MFA Screenwriting Program. So yes, I’m biased because of the setting of this book, but also pretty damn particular in regards to what I think is good writing. This I know for sure. Sean Finnegan is a damn good writer. He’s managed to create something specific and unique, yet make it extremely relatable. It doesn’t matter where you grew up or in what part of the world, you grew up, you formed deep relationships, you suffered loss, you persevered. What human hasn’t? I have found that any good story is about one of these seven universal struggles. Justice, Truth, Full Potential, Identity, Responsibility, Healing, and Love. This author has eloquently tackled not one, but all of these struggles in this lovely opus of a young man’s life growing up in Northern California. I am both impressed, and a bit jealous to be frank. That is no easy feat. With that said, what resonated with me the most was just how spiritual this book is. Spirituality pumps through the veins of every chapter. None of it is heavy handed, but the notion of a “higher power” drives this story, yet stays just inside your blind spot. I appreciate and respect the subtlety. Mr. Finnegan has something to say but instead of screaming at you, he chooses to whisper, forcing his reader to lean in. I was grateful that I did. I highly encourage others to do the same. Great book.

If you love S. E. Hinton and grew up in the 80's this is your book!!!!

This book pretty much nails down the experience of growing up in Nor-Cal in the 80's! Having grown up myself in Santa Rosa CA, during said time frame and I can tell you it reads more like an autobiography than a work of fiction. If you love anything by S. E. Hinton GET THIS BOOK NOW!!!

I can say that this read will spark some very necessary and honest conversations between loved ones on life & death

Finnegan writes with a kind of stream of consciousness, but with more shades of Jack Kerouac than Faulkner. Real and raw, the author doesn’t pull any punches so while the age of the protagonist and the coming of age theme might lead one to include this in Young Adult, parents might want to take a look at it first. I can say that this read will spark some very necessary and honest conversations between loved ones on life & death, sex, drugs, and the gaps between generations, not to mention the clash of value systems. Call it the male perspective on coming of age, a boy’s Some Girls Are and potentially as controversial.
