Coming of age in 1985, Pavel and his two best friends Lee and Gooch live for San Francisco’s thrash metal and punk rock scene. Don't sleep on this book.

I feel the need to fully disclose two items. One, I grew up in Northern California, in the 80’s, spending the first twenty years of my life there. That could make one bias in reading a book called Norcal that takes place in the 80’s. Which leads me to my second disclosure. I am a professional screenwriter who also teaches at UCLA in the MFA Screenwriting Program. So yes, I’m biased because of the setting of this book, but also pretty damn particular in regards to what I think is good writing. This I know for sure. Sean Finnegan is a damn good writer. He’s managed to create something specific and unique, yet make it extremely relatable. It doesn’t matter where you grew up or in what part of the world, you grew up, you formed deep relationships, you suffered loss, you persevered. What human hasn’t? I have found that any good story is about one of these seven universal struggles. Justice, Truth, Full Potential, Identity, Responsibility, Healing, and Love. This author has eloquently tackled not one, but all of these struggles in this lovely opus of a young man’s life growing up in Northern California. I am both impressed, and a bit jealous to be frank. That is no easy feat. With that said, what resonated with me the most was just how spiritual this book is. Spirituality pumps through the veins of every chapter. None of it is heavy handed, but the notion of a “higher power” drives this story, yet stays just inside your blind spot. I appreciate and respect the subtlety. Mr. Finnegan has something to say but instead of screaming at you, he chooses to whisper, forcing his reader to lean in. I was grateful that I did. I highly encourage others to do the same. Great book.

If you love S. E. Hinton and grew up in the 80's this is your book!!!!

This book pretty much nails down the experience of growing up in Nor-Cal in the 80's! Having grown up myself in Santa Rosa CA, during said time frame and I can tell you it reads more like an autobiography than a work of fiction. If you love anything by S. E. Hinton GET THIS BOOK NOW!!!

I can say that this read will spark some very necessary and honest conversations between loved ones on life & death

Finnegan writes with a kind of stream of consciousness, but with more shades of Jack Kerouac than Faulkner. Real and raw, the author doesn’t pull any punches so while the age of the protagonist and the coming of age theme might lead one to include this in Young Adult, parents might want to take a look at it first. I can say that this read will spark some very necessary and honest conversations between loved ones on life & death, sex, drugs, and the gaps between generations, not to mention the clash of value systems. Call it the male perspective on coming of age, a boy’s Some Girls Are and potentially as controversial.
