From Booklist
After two years on the run, best friends Rose, half-human/half-vampire, and Lissa, a mortal vampire princess, are caught and returned to St. Vladimir's Academy. Up until then, Rose had kept Lissa safe from her enemies; school, however, brings both girls additional challenges and responsibilities. How they handle peer pressure, nasty gossip, new relationships, and anonymous threats may mean life or death. Likable narrator Rose hides doubts about her friend behind a tough exterior; orphan Lissa, while coping with difficult emotional issues such as depression and survivor's guilt, uses her emerging gifts for good. Mead's absorbing, debut YA novel, the first in a new series, blends intricately detailed fantasy with a contemporary setting, teen-relevant issues, and a diverse, if sometimes sterotyped, cast of supporting characters. Occasional steamy sex and a scattering of vulgar language demand mature readers, but teens able to handle the edgy elements will speed through this vamp story and anticipate the next installment. Review
This story is no ordinary vampire tale. Mead has done her homework on Romanian folklore and Orthodox Catholic saints, and she uses it to weave a unique and mesmerizing mystery with a whodunit ending that even the most skilled detectives will not predict. With social angst that every teenager can appreciate and sexual tension that leaves Stephanie Meyer's Twilight looking like a children's book, this little gem is sure to be a hit.--VOYA

My Favorite Vampire Series!
By Book Talk With Jess
How many vampire books are there and how many of them are based on the cliche' world of vampires? Too many to count!

The definition of Vampire: a dead person who leaves the grave at night to bite and suck blood from living people.

The very definition would cause you to assume that this book is about the un-dead who only come out at night and prey on humans, especially young females who are out wandering in places that they shouldn't.

Not Vampire Academy!!!!

The world that Mead created is not your typical Vampire World. She has created a world with not one, but two types of vampires and a hybrid.

Moroi- vampires that live off of not only blood, but food. They can go out in the daylight, only it makes them weak. They don't hunt humans, but have humans who willingly offer themselves to feed the Moroi, because they get off on something that is in the saliva of the Moroi.

Strigoi- vampires who feed on Moroi, hunting them down to kill them/turn them into Strigoi. They can't go out during the day and can only be killed by a stake to the heart, decapitation or set on fire.

Than you have Dhampirs (Hybrid) - part vampire, part human...do not drink blood. Most Dhampirs train to be the guardians of the Moroi. They have special abilities such has fast reflexes, keen eyesight and hearing. They are strong and are able to take on a Strigoi only after being trained at St. Vladimir's Academy.

Now that being said, it is a lot of information to take in, that's exactly what I thought! However, the way Mead wrote about these types of vampires, are easily explained. It sounds like a lot of info to take in, but she explains it much better than I can.

This has become one of my favorite Vampire Series and I have re-read it numerous times over the years.

Even if you don't like Vampire based stories, I suggest you give Vampire Academy a chance. It is full of action, fighting, romance, drama, mystery and much more.

This book was a page turner. There was not a second that went by that I was distracted because I was so involved with this book.

I highly recommend this book and the entire Vampire Academy Series!

Very engaging and definitely has character appeal.
By Kindle Customer
I'm 50 years old and I've been an avid fan of paranormal romance for many years. I'm always on the lookout for new ideas regarding the paranormal/supernatural. This book starts out slow, but gradually things started to make sense. The characters and storyline was very engaging. Ms. Mead created her characters with flaws. These flaws made the characters appeal to me more. It's about 2 teenagers (Rose and Lissa). Rose, a dhampir and Lissa, Royalty vampire. Rose has the mentality of being stubborn, very loyal to Lissa, opinionated, and "us against the world" attitude. I think a lot of readers would not like her. You find out that she grew up without her birth parents. The book goes into some of it. Rose has become this person to become the personal guardian of her best friend, Lissa. They have a bond that no one can penetrate. While Rose is a "in your face kind of girl", Lissa is just the opposite; timid, almost too shy to be of royalty. She has powers that only have been spoken of in many years past. With Rose's help, she tries to gain knowledge about her newfound powers. Of course, many people find out about them, but it's "hushed up". Lissa would be seen as a power to use. Rose and her mentor, Dimitri (hopefully Rose's love interest) helps to protect Lissa from the oncoming assaults. I'll definitely be getting other books in the series to read. Keep up the great writing, Ms. R. Mead, and I'll keep reading them. Cheers!!!!!

A slow-burn forbidden romance junkie's dream!!!! LOVED it!
By Megan - Reading Books Like a Boss
I first read VAMPIRE ACADEMY more than four years ago. Remembering slow-burning forbidden romance between Rose and Dimitri and pulse-pounding action present throughout the whole series made me want to relive it all over again. Would I love it as much the second time around? I can answer that question with a resounding YES!

This is the first book in the series, and sometimes first books can be boring with all the world-building and character development. NOT THIS BOOK! Richelle Mead effortlessly blends together the world of the Moroi, dhampirs, Strigoi, and the Academy with action and memorable characters from the very start. It was very hard to put this book down once I started reading it.

The book starts with Rose and Lissa being taken back to the Academy in Montana. Two years prior, Rose had taken Lissa away from their high school, for reasons you’ll find out in the book. Once back at the Academy, the headmistress wants to send Rose away for taking Lissa. But after some persuasion on Dimitri’s part—one of the guardians sent to bring her back—she lets Rose stay subject to some conditions. Rose must stay out of trouble and take on extra training sessions in order to catch up. She assigns Dimitri to be Rose’s trainer. After arriving back on campus, it becomes clear that someone is targeting Lissa and Rose gets worried. Rose is further distracted when she starts to develop very real feelings for Dimitri.

I must talk about Rose and Dimitri because it would be a huge injustice if I didn’t. In Vampire Academy, Rose and Dimitri start off as trainer/trainee (not really friends, but something else) but there is clearly a very special connection between them. Rose is the outspoken, witty, strong, and brave person who will do anything to protect her best friend. While Dimitri is brooding, honorable, and the strong, silent type of guy. Basically, he’s my favorite type of hero. Underneath it all is also this wonderful romantic tension that you can cut with a knife! This is where things get good, guys.

“Did you see that dress?”
“I saw the dress.”
“Did you like it?”
He didn’t answer. I took that as a yes.
“Am I going to endanger my reputation if I wear it to the dance?”
When he spoke, I could barely hear him. You’ll endanger the school.”

I liked that the reason why they couldn’t be together was something tangible and concrete. It made sense. It is a rule at the Academy that guardians cannot be romantically involved due to the nature of their job—their job is to protect Moroi and they can’t put someone else ahead of that duty. And doesn’t that just bite the big one because, damn, these two would be GREAT together!

I won’t go into the explanation of the world in this review because you can figure that out for yourself. However, if you find yourself leery of reading yet another vampire series, don’t because this series is really great. What I love so much about this book is how wonderfully Richelle Mead sets the stage for the rest of the series, while creating an engaging and exciting book that is freaking addictive. You have the subplot with Lissa and Christian, the danger surrounding Lissa, the budding something between Rose and Dimitri, and the dramatics of high school.

If you haven’t read this series from start to finish, go right now! If you’re like me and have a weakness for amazing forbidden love stories with twists and turns, then Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series is the series for you! I have always remembered the journey I took when reading through the books the first time and I cannot wait to feel it all over again.
