Excellent information, but not visually pleasing

I did not realize when I bought this book that it was published in 1982... Amazon says 2004, so I don't know what's going on there. The information is extremely in depth, and the amount of drawings is awesome. However the book looks like an old 1970's collage text book and I was expecting something more like a coffee table book with excellent image quality. The pages look like they were created on a black & white xerox copy machine (though the drawings are still examinable). In fact I actually thought the book was a copied fake of the original book at first inspection, until I saw the publishing date. This book will be very useful anyway which is why I give it 3 stars and not 2, but being an artist myself I hate visually bleak books about art.

You will be surprised!

One thinks of the Renaissance as an era when medical knowledge was at best backward, but as you get into this volume you will see that there was an incredible (given the times) amount known, and if there was any one great person to be thanked for a leap in real knowledge it was Da Vinci. One thinks of him primarily as an artist, but here you see Leonardo the scientist at his best, and his unbounding (and fearless given the church!) curiosity. That he was a genius is no where more self evident than in this volume! If there's a 'complaint' here it would be in the reproductions of the drawings- but given their age that would be unavoidable. That so many of Leonard's work has been lost over time through stupidity/dogmatic thinking is a terrible loss, it's as if we had only apart of Einstein's papers. Here you get as complete an edition (through much effort of the 'authors) as you will find- even today & in this age they are finding things that Leonardo understood about the mechanisms of the heart that no one understood! I read it & I as well, gave the copy to my Physician. And a note: Imagine working with your 'preferred hand' while taking notes with your other hand, written backwards & in reverse (as a type of 'code') at the same time! We can only hope that more of his works will surface in the future.

what a great book, Leonardo was a master painter and this book is a great tool to see his work and study on the human anatomy. i would recommend this book to anyone who wants to study anatomy.
