About the Author
James H. Speer is an associate professor of geography and geology at Indiana State University and is the organizer of the Annual North American Dendroecological Fieldweek. He is the current president of the Tree-Ring Society and his scholarly articles appear in leading journals including Publications in Ecology, Canadian Journal of Forest Research, Journal of Biogeography, and Climate Research.

Easy-to-read, comprehensive

I'm a PhD student in ecology and dendrochronology is one component of my disseratation work. I've had to mostly teach myself this subject as there are very few people on my campus who do this kind of work. I use "Fundamentals of Tree-Ring Research" as my go-to reference for all sorts of questions in dendrochronology, from computer software to conceptual issues. The book is easily the most readable of the dendrochronology textbooks I've found and probably also the most comprehensive. Many other textbooks either assume a fair amount of familiarity with the material or only cover a few aspects of the field. It's only a matter of time before this book becomes one of the most-used references in the field.

Excellent text, and great for introductory as well as advanced courses

Dr. Speer has put together a fantastic resource for those of us who want to use tree-ring research as a way to engage and inform students who might not otherwise consider science as an area of study. His writing is logical, exceptionally readable, and nicely paced and covers historical as well as technical topics, adding interest and texture. Dendro is very much a cross-disciplinary field, and this book contains solid discussions of each of the diverse parts of the science, as well as useful pointers to other sources for reading and discussion. I have used this book once before and will again for a medium sized class of undergraduates in which we mixed active collection and analysis of tree cores with reading of primary literature, all supported by chapters in this book. I highly recommend this text, as well as the study of tree rings, to any ecologist, geographer or geologist who wants to bring new excitement and student interest to his or her classes.

This is a helpful and straightforward book for the beginner or anyone who is interested in dendrochronology

I bought this book to help me prepare for a Dendroecology field week this summer. The text is easy to read, the figures are clear and appropriate to the topic, and there are many useful appendices in the back of the book. Every dendrochronologist, or aspiring dendrochronologist, should have this book on their shelves.
